When it comes to planning a family vacation, some of the most emphasis should be put on picking a destination or activity that promotes family bonding. Activities and locations that bring the family closer together serve two purposes; they strengthen the bonds between family members as well as serving as a relaxing, fun, and sometimes exciting vacation destination. Camping is just one of the many types of vacations that can bring families closer together. Whether a family camps regularly on weekend outings, once a year for an extended stay, or is just thinking of getting into camping for the first time, there are things that can be done to make sure that their camping experience is a successful one.
1. Nearby Attractions - While picking a remote camping location may be tempting and of interest to some types of outdoor enthusiasts, for a good family camping trip it is best to pick a location that is near other attractions. Younger members of the family can get easily bored if the majority of the time spent on vacation is spent at the campsite. Many quality camping locations have a number of attractions nearby including: lakes, rivers, hiking and biking trails, ranger stations, historical sites, waterfalls, forest service roads, and even shopping.
2. Diversions - Packing a camp stove, a tent, sleeping bags, and food are all very important to a successful camping trip, but there are other things to pack as well. Great family memories can be made by doing things together around the campsite or campfire. A family that brings card games or a favorite board game will have more options as far as filling down time and also participating in an activity that forces everyone to come together.
3. Great Food - Going camping is a great opportunity to experiment with eating food that is cooked outdoors. Whether a family prefers cooking on a camp stove or if they like to “rough it” and cook over a campfire, there are lots of options in the food department. Hot dogs and marshmallows are great to roast over an open fire, but there is more that can be done too. If there is a metal grate that can be placed over the fire, then a piece of tin foil, some chips, and cheese makes campfire nachos a real possibility. Wrapping up chunks of chicken and different vegetables and spices in foil and placing them around the edge of the campfire is a great way to make what is known as “Hobo meals.”
4. Outdoor Recreation Equipment - While safety is paramount when it comes to camping, depending on the immediate surroundings there may be many opportunities to enhance the camping experience with a few outdoor recreational items. If the campsite is at or near a lake or river, then an innertube or inflatable raft may be a great way to have some fun on the water. If there are bike trails nearby to the campground then mountain bikes would provide for hours of entertainment and exercise. A simple look at the surroundings and offerings of a given campground will lead there to be many ways that the trip can be enhanced by bringing along recreational equipment.
A camping trip can be a fun and exciting vacation for families with children of all ages. Getting the chance to experience the great outdoors is the kind of opportunity that can enhance the lives of families and children in ways they may not even know existed. Camping is the type of family activity that can bring everyone closer together. Families should make the most of their vacation and camping opportunities by focusing on destinations, attractions, and diversions that promote family bonding as well as great memory making. Camping is just the type of vacation that can pull it off too.
