Green Traveling Tips

Nowadays, everything we do has an impact on our planet. We are now experiencing the consequences of what thousands of years of human activity has done to the environment. However, there are countless options of lifestyle changes we can do in order to decrease our carbon footprint, or in other words, minimize the damage our existence will cause the environment.

We all know that the carbon emissions caused by automobiles and airplanes is huge. But this does not have to stop you from traveling, because little changes you make in your travel plans can go a long way in saving the environment from further damage and can contribute to conserving the nature and culture of a various place. It also does not mean that the enjoyment in your experience will be decreased; but rather it will evolve into a more meaningful experience.

greentravelOne of the most important aspects in traveling is accommodation. There are thousands of green accommodations found worldwide, also known as eco-resorts. These accommodations are designed with recycling programs, consumption reduction, water and energy conservation, and programs that give back to the local community. Green accommodations are not necessarily expensive, there are many out there that can suit every budget.

When you have landed in your destination, think about your mode of transport. Many tourist destinations are pedestrian-friendly and also offer bicycle rentals. Both methods are great for the environment and also let the tourist appreciate the culture and beautiful surroundings. Not to mention, these are also very affordable modes of transport as compared to renting a car. If your traveling plans include car rental, select a hybrid vehicle.

While planning the activities, remember that small decisions you make can have a significant impact. For example, it helps to select tours that are environmentally friendly. You can inquire if tours give back to the community and if these are arranged in large or small groups. Choosing tours with smaller groups is a more environmentally responsible option.

Here are other tips that will make your travel more environmentally friendly:

  • Throw your trash in the proper receptacle.
  • Support the local economy by purchasing local products and local food instead of those manufactured in other countries.
  • Avoid plucking leaves and flowers from plants.
  • When snorkeling, do not touch coral or other sea life.
  • Help support the conservation programs by visiting protected areas.
  • Use a solar charger for your mobile phone, iPod, and other gadgets.
  • Avoid littering countless water bottles by using one, and refilling it throughout your trip. You are also likely to spend much less money on water this way.
  • Carefully think about what you are bringing. Heavier baggage means the use of more fuel, hence more carbon emissions.

With these tips, you can enjoy your travel experience and still be kind to the planet. Remember, make it so that when you leave, your mind is full of memories, and nothing is left but footprints.
