As someone who works online, I’m usually very happy about the prospect of finding Internet access in unexpected places. But these days, I often find myself wondering, “is there any spot left on Earth without internet access?” Wait, don’t answer that. I might not like what I hear.
The truth is, high tech gadgets and Internet access have become commonplace in nearly every room of our homes, even the bedroom. But for those of you who have often wished you could go online without leaving the comfort of your own bed, your dreams have just been answered. High-end bedding manufacturer, Legget & Platt is about to release a new “techno” bed called the “Starry Night Sleep Technology Bed.”

The company’s new high-end “multimedia bed” features the very latest in sleep technology, combined with the latest in Internet, audio and visual technology.
The gadget-rich bed will include wireless internet connectivity, an iPod docking station, surround sound speakers, sub-woofer, LCD Projector, dual independent temperature controls and a DVR unit.
Released this past week at the International Consumer Electronics show, the bed will also feature a vibration detector to eliminate snoring by automatically elevating half the bed, and returning it gradually to normal after several minutes. The company is betting that this feature alone will draw and plenty of consumers, as chronic snoring is a major problem for many couples.
But of course, a high-tech bed with this many gadgets does not come cheap. The Sleep Technology bed is priced between $20,000 and $50,000, depending on the model chosen, and the options installed. The company points out that the high price tag is well worth it considering the plethora of state-of-the-art high-tech gadgets and refinements.
But while many people these days are used to having a wide variety of electronic gadgets in the bedroom, from flat screen TVs and Tivos, to home theatre systems, the real question is whether Americans will actually want so much high-technology in their bed?
This is certainly a huge question for Legget & Platt, who have invested millions in developing the new bed, and are expecting big sales from the high-end bed market by winter/spring 2008 — 2009.
While the Starry Night is not especially elegant to look at, it features cutting edge sleep technology, including advanced memory foam mattresses and an onboard computer that monitors your sleep habits for up to 30 days, and offers suggestions for better night’s sleep.
So besides being a “multimedia bed,” the Starry Night is also a therapeutic bed, designed to ensure a better night’s sleep, while providing a dozen or more cutting-edge gadgets within arm’s length.
