WWE Judgement Day was looking like a very exciting pay per view right up until the last minute last night, and the excitement only increased as the opening pyro sequences rang out. The WWE has not had a really good pay per view in quite some time, but Judgement Day seemed destined to be a great one. How would Judgement Day eventually stack up?
The opening match with John Morrison vs Shelton Benjamin was actually one of the few highlights of an otherwise drab pay per view. Morrison might just be the face of the future for the WWE, and he was given a great push with the win over The Gold Standard. Morrison is a star waiting to happen.
Umaga and CM Punk was a match up that the WWE could really have done more with. Instead they had Punk fight the typical fight against the Samoan Bulldozer and eventually job to him. The match seemed like a bit of a shoo in for Umaga, as they are trying to reestablish his dominance. Punk and his Money in the Bank briefcase are sure to be part of upcoming storylines, but for now he is moved to the back burner.
The ECW world title match up between Christian and Jack Swaggar was actually one of the more entertaining matches for Judgement Day. Christian continued to frustrate Swaggar by sneaking in a win through dubious means. This storyline and feud is growing on me the last couple of weeks, and Christian is single handedly carrying the ECW brand.
The Mysterio and Jericho Intercontinental Match was an exciting bout from start to finish and the WWE actually surprised me for the first time by letting Mysterio hold on to the belt. Jericho was expected to secure the title for the ninth time, and instead was whipped soundly. It should fan the flames for Jericho and help to solidify Rey’s status as IC champion.
John Cena beat Big Show in a match that was very much boring and expected. Every person that was watching knew that Cena would beat him, and the WWE had him do just that. This match did nothing for me or for wrestling at all.
Of all the matches at Judgement Day, the match with Randy Orton and Batista had the most excitement for me. The problem was, the WWE simply had a no decision, fantasy type match. Pay per views are supposed to bring some type of closure to the feuds, and not just make them even more undecided. Giving Batista a disqualification win was a really bad move. Either have him lose to Orton, or let him win clean. Personally, I do not think Batista should have even been in the match.
Finally, we come to the main event of Edge versus Jeff Hardy. The match was everything you might expect from these two guys and the best sports entertainment in wrestling. Exciting, high flying, and at times hilarious, the match was just about to save Judgement Day from being just any other pay per view….. That is, until Matt Hardy showed up like usual and ended the match by interfering. The WWE just used this angle and now they are using it again? Big mistake. They literally ruined what was the best match of the night in my opinion, and therefore the entire pay per view.
