Edge and Christian spent a number of years dominating the tag team division in WWE. During that time, the WWE enjoyed more success with tag team wrestling than pretty much any other time in their history. Now, when the tag team matches come on, most WWE wrestling fans use it for a bathroom break. There are some exceptions of course, but they are few and far between. Why is this is the case? Can the recent Unified Championship win by Edge and Jericho change things?

The reason for the WWE problems in the tag team division is really all about focus. The WWE seems to have decided over the last couple of years that the division is no longer important. This is evident in the way they do nothing to build up interest in the storylines, and the fact that they will not leave a tag team together for more than five minutes. As soon as some heat starts, they turn someone into a heel or face and have them fight. This method is killing tag team wrestling in the WWE.

The WWE has notably made a step in the right direction with the Edge and Jericho win at the Bash. They may not have intended to give the tag team division a boost, but the did. Ironically, the move was likely so that the two superstars could move around from Raw to Smackdown to ECW at will. Whatever the reason, it was a good move in the long run in my opinion. It will bring excitement to the tag team division, and that was sorely lacking.

Take for example Edge and Jericho’s first defense on Raw – Jericho and Edge faced the former champions Carlitto and Primo. For months these two were the champs and nobody much paid attention. Edge and Jericho come on the scene and instantly the crowd was jumping up and down for them. This is a perfect example of superstars pushing the up and coming talent. It is something that must happen if the tag team division is going to work.

While Edge and Jericho are huge stars in the sport as singles wrestlers, they are exactly what the tag team division need. If they hang around and stay an actual tag team, the division will get interesting once again, and other stars will be made. It remains to be seen if this is about the tag teams, or simply another ruse to build up a Jericho/Edge feud. Time will tell the story.

If Edge and Jericho do hang around, it will be fun to watch them battle Legacy. With Jack Swagger joining Raw and presumably joining Legacy, the combinations here are very interesting. Hopefully, Vince will see the great possibilities and stick it out with Edge and Jericho.
