Brett Favre is considering coming out of retirement yet again to play for none other than the Green Bay Packers most hated rival… The Minnesota Vikings. While many would love to see the Cajun gunslinger throwing the pigskin for yet another year, I think that Favre really needs to call it a day. Seeing Favre in a Viking uniform is not something that I really care to see, even if the Packer brass deserves it.
Brett Favre spent his entire football career in Green Bay. He has retired and came back six thousand times already, and nobody really even believes him anymore now that he has done so. That is not so much the issue for me, however. For me, it is all about the legacy that Favre is leaving behind. He left the Packers and retired, then signed on for a very so so season with the New York Jets last season.
While the season with the Jets did show that Favre can still play, it is really not the point. He did not show that he can be dominant. He simply showed that he can play at a level that is NFL acceptable. Brett Favre is not supposed to be average. Brett Favre is synonymous with NFL Legend. Anything less than that is not acceptable really.
Let us consider the best case scenario for Favre in Minnesota. He comes back, teams up with Adrian Peterson in Minnesota and wins the Super Bowl. If this were to come to pass, he would suddenly be largely hated in his football hometown of Green Bay. This is something that I can not imagine being a good thing when one looks at Favre’s career and longevity.
The truth is, Favre as anything other than a Packer is simply odd. I found him as a Jet to be a stranger, and a shell of his former self. I have no urge to see him go running off to Minnesota and parade around in that purple outfit. As many times as Favre has whipped the Vikings, I am shocked that Minnesota wants him at all anyway. He should be the most hated man in Minnesota.
If Favre does come out and go to Minnesota, it is the equivalent of Aikman going to Washington, or McNabb taking over for the Cowboys. Can you imagine Peyton Manning moving over to the Titans next season? Of course not. It is simply… wrong.
Favre needs to go home and be the Packer hero he is destined to be. God willing he will do just that. I like my memories just as they are.
