Some engage in sports for its practical benefits of keeping one fit. Others see sports as entertainment, for leisure purposes. But serious athletes are into their sports for the love of the game, including the competition that’s tied to it. The game is all about conquering, whether it be a goal set by the team or ones personal objectives alone.

The first filter to gaining competitive advantage is knowing what one is in for. Is it for leisure or is one aiming for gold? Knowing ones personal objective is crucial as it determines the level of intensity one will dedicate to the game. In a sport where two players are equally skilled and seasoned, the question will always be who’s hungrier to win?

competitionOnce the intensity level is determined, the amount of training and conditioning that one engages in to get in shape for battle is also laid out. Physical conditioning is the first challenge. To be on top of the game, the competition starts even before the playing begins. It all commences at the training field.

Building up the athlete’s endurance is one task, which requires time and discipline. Regular aerobic activities have to be part of the program, no matter how routine and dull it might be, as stamina is something that is gained through a period of training, and acquired healthily without risking injury from over-fatigue if done slowly but surely. The heart and lungs have to be conditioned to cope with the fast beating and breathing, by pushing just enough to raise the bar but not too much to shock the system.

Muscle-building in the correct body parts to perform the skills for the sport follows the same concept. Pushing to hard too soon could cause tears and fatigue, which can weaken instead of strengthen the body. Physical condition takes time and has to be partnered with proper diet to ensure that the nutrients taken in by the system are enough to repair and rebuild the muscles, especially for those who want to increase their frame.

But being physically fit is only half of the preparation. The other half is mental alertness. Winning in competitive arenas require more than brawl alone. Brains are of essence, which one has to prepare for by setting strategies, studying plays and mapping out scenarios to triumph ones opponent(s). Having a clear and focused picture of what to expect, and what to prepare for mentally helps one to keep his presence of mind come game time and not lose composure when caught unawares by circumstances or counter strategies.

Gaining competitive advantage requires physical and mental preparation, which can be acquired and sustained only by discipline, commitment, and determination to win. Half the battle is won during the training stages. Come game time, luck plays a part, but it’s the level of intensity that one has put in the previous days that sets one on pole position to win the gold. Whoever was hungrier, and stayed hungry wins the race.
