Water skiing is one of the funnest water sports in the world. Flying along the water feeling like you are gliding is a feeling that is tough to find in any other sport. Unfortunately, before you can glide across the water, you must learn to get up on the skis. Water skiing is not easy for everyone. Some people are able to instinctively get up on skis, while others have to try over and over again. A large part of getting up on water skis is knowing the basics. This article will take you through the process of getting up on water skis, and then it is up to you to put them into practice.

The first thing to remember is that you have to have skis that fit properly. If your skis do not fit, then you are fighting a losing battle trying to get up on them. Make sure the skis are snug on your feet. When you try on your skis to check the fit, it is a good idea to do so in the water. The feel of a water ski changes when you get in the water.

Once you are in the water, you need to float on your back and pull your ski up out of the water in front of you. To know how high they should reach out of the water, you should think of a ruler. Your skis should stick out of the water about as high as a ruler would be if placed on top of the water. Try to maintain this all the way through the process until you are up on the skis.

Get the rope and make sure that all the excess slack is out in front of you. The rope should be placed directly in front of you and between the two skis sticking out of the water. If you have a ton of slack close to you, then you will get a quick jerk when the boat pulls off. Make sure the boat slowly pulls the line slack before gunning the motor.

As you float and keep the skis out of the water, your knees should be bent up towards your chest. Not too much, but enough that you are in a semi squatting position. Once the boat is in position, your skis should be pointing at the back of the boat. This seems obvious, but you should never try to start on skis when the boat is out of position.

Once the boat starts moving, you need to try to maintain the position you are in. Keep the skis even as they start to slowly move through the water. Keep your knees solidly in position underneath you. Maintain how high your skis are out of the water.

Many people think you should lock your arms, but this is false to get up on water skis. You should have your arms straight, but slightly bent at the elbow. Keep this position as it will give you more control when the boat begins to pull you out of the water.

Once the driver guns the boat, you will feel the tension on the rope. Your first inclination will be to pull on the rope. Do not do this. You have to let the boat pull you, and not the other way around. The boat will have the power to pull you erect in the water. Once the skis are horizontal to the water, then you stand up. Do not try to stand until this happens or you will wipe out. You will feel the skis go horizontal on the water. You do not want to lean forward or you will fall straight on your face.

If you practice this process over and over, you will eventually be able to get up on your skis. The key here is to make sure you do the process to the best of your ability. Once you get up that first time, then it becomes easier every time thereafter. It is much like riding a bike. Eventually, you will be able to get up on your skis every single time with hardly no effort at all.
