Basketball is one of the most marketable sports in the world, with the popularity of NBA and its famous players. In some parts of the world, it is the most common sport enjoyed and engaged in by the youth, aspired to excel in by the men, with it’s season as a big event for all.
With the fame and prestige that is given to star players of this sport, many would do everything to fly in court. But what is required of one to shine in this sport? How can one rise above the clutter of so many good players from different walks of life? The sport is too widely practiced that great talents from different training styles can come out and raise the bar of performance each time. It requires a lot of time, practice, and skills to excel in Basketball.
One important advantage is an individual’s physique. As in most sports, height is an advantage but will mean nothing unless one builds up his body to maximize this. Basketball is a contact sport where one has to press and push to defend his court, or drive to the other team’s court to make a basket. To be a good offensive and defensive player, one has to be more buff and strong so as not to be pushed around or left behind.
For good defensive play, the upper legs have to be in good condition. The thighs are crucial in doing lateral, which is the primary movement that one has to master to keep on guard. To shape up the upper legs, adding variations to endurance runs is recommended. Instead of jogging and running alone, doing laterals on both sides and quick steps (2 steps per second in place) are nice to incorporate in the program. Doing so would do wonders for defense play.
For a strong offensive play, the arms are important to be built up. Whether a player is comfortable with hard drives to the basket or long shots from outside the painted area, strong arms are an advantage in making sure the shots make it through. For long ranges, the strength is required to get the ball in the basket from a distance while sticking to proper shooting form. Weak arms would look for strength from the core and legs for extra momentum, which would require one to shoot from a lower position, thus easier to block by defenders. Being fit on the upper arms are also advantages for going in the painted areas as it allows one to break through the raised hands of defense and getting the ball in, foul or no foul.
But to be good in booth defensive and offensive play, building on the lower legs is most advantageous. It’s this that allows one hang time, putting one at a good position to take baskets or get rebounds offensively or defensively regardless of height. Ability to stay long and high in air makes it difficult for opponents being guarded to take shots as well.
A basketball star can be groomed with proper training and muscle- building. All ones needs is focus and determination to become a star.
