In a very strange turn of events, Donald Trump has purchased Monday Night Raw from the WWE’s Vince McMahon. This latest stunt by Vince McMahon is being met with a large amount of resistance from long time professional wrestling fans. While the purchase of Raw is almost certainly just a storyline in the world of the WWE, it still means that Donald Trump will be “running” Raw. Trump’s experience with professional wrestling is next to nothing, and one must wonder if he will be able to put out a marketable story line for the company.
Professional wrestling has long since been revealed to be sports entertainment and not real. The pounding that the wrestlers take is all too real, but the drama in and around the ring, as well as the results of the show are scripted. With that said, the purchase of Raw by Donald Trump comes at a strange time in the WWE’s history. The WWE is struggling to find a story line that works right now.
One of the problems the WWE is having is surrounding the WWE Championship. The writers put the championship on 40 year old Batista at the last pay per view, and he promptly got hurt during that match in real life. This left the WWE with a problem. Their new World Champion was injured, and could not defend the strap. That said, the WWE has to sell tickets. Batista dropped the belt on the next night during Raw via a set up with Randy Orton “injuring” him, and then Batista not being able to return for the mandatory rematch. This caused him to lose the belt, and then Orton won the belt the next week in a fatal fourway match with John Cena, Big Show, and HHH.
Sound confusing?
Exactly. That is exactly the reason that the WWE is struggling. New fans come in and can not follow what is happening, and old fans are tuning out because of the confounded and repeated story lines. Now they are bringing in Donald Trump, and I do not know any fan that understands that angle. At least it will be semi-interesting to see how it plays out, train wreck or not.
Going into the first week of Raw with Donald Trump in charge, he has HHH and Randy Orton going against one another with the belt on the line. The problem with this is that we have seen this hundreds of times already. Why not push one of the young superstars with a feud against Orton? Trump also is offering a television commercial free Raw, which will be nice. This is the first time ever that Raw has been shown commercial free.
With Donald Trump at the helm of the greatest wrestling show of all time, the results are likely to be terrible or great. No mid-ground results here, folks. Trump will fly or plummet. As bad as things have been around the WWE story lines lately, I don’t think even Donald Trump could make them worse. I guess we will find out Monday night.
