When the Chicago Bears got Jay Cutler, perhaps nobody was more surprised than the average Chicago Bear fan. It seemed to materialize out of nowhere, and the Bears fans surely did not see it coming. Jay Cutler under center for the Bears still feels weird even months later, and it has to make one wonder if the fit will take. What many people outside of Chicago do not realize is that Jay Cutler is not your average everyday quarterback. He is not just a rocket arm with no brains. The guy understands the game. Still, can Cutler do what no other quarterback in recent years could do for the Bears? Can he take them to the Super Bowl?
To be honest, that is really a trick question. No one player can take a team anywhere. For proof of this, just take a look at the great Barry Sanders’ career in Detroit. That said, a large part of the Bears success will depend on the defense and the ability of the Bears’ receivers to catch the ball. What will Cutler bring to the Bears?
Cutler is known for his rocket arm, of which he is most certainly deserving. What is not well known of Cutler is that he has an accurate arm as well. Cutler does an awesome job of putting the football in position to be caught. Many quarterbacks can heave the ball a country mile. Many quarterbacks are accurate. It is a rare quarterback that can do both and Cutler is among them.
The receiver I see that will get the most out of that arm is Devin Hester. Hester is all about after the catch. He is absolutely difficult to tackle if he gets the ball in position to make the play. Take a look back at some past films with Orton and Grossman. Hester always got the ball either too early, too late, or not at all with them. If you hit Hester in stride, he will break a certain percentage of those passes for the whole enchilada. He is just that elusive and fast.
Cutler will get Hester the ball in the right position to maximize his talents. The same is true for the other Bears as well. As a matter of fact, the great Matt Forte will get a huge boost from Cutler both in the air and the ground.
Forte will get his screen passes out in front now instead of slightly behind him or down at the ground. This will put him in a great position to make the play. As for his running game, all he really needs is to keep the safeties out of the box. If the safeties are up, Cutler will burn them. If they are back then Forte will have the room he needs to do the damage. The Bears could end up being a real tough win on Sundays for the opposition.
For all of this to come into place, the Bears defense will need to keep the other team out of the end zone. If they can hold the opposition to field goals, Cutler and company will get their points.
So do I think that Cutler can lead the Bears to the Super Bowl? Yes I do, but I think it is a couple years away. Once the Bears get that marquee receiver that can perfectly complement him like Reggie Wayne does for Manning, then yes he can. The Bears are going to be real happy with this one.
