Horror movies are one of the few genres whose fans will suffer through five bad ones to find that one good one. Horror movies are very much a hit or miss proposition. What is interesting however, is that what is a miss to one horror fan will be a miss to another. Part of this is due to the fact that few movies are universally scary to all types of people. The truth is, few movies are scary to everyone, and those few that are get bought up quickly by horror fans. This can lead to a serious problem finding a good scary movie that nobody has heard of or owns. If you have a horror movie fan that you need a gift for, you need some off the beaten path type choices. Here are five great options that many people have never seen or heard of, but most any horror fan would love:
Black Christmas
The old version of this movie is absolutely one of the first (if not the first) entries into the slasher genre of movies. Halloween gets most of the print, but this movie actually came out four years prior. Black Christmas is without a doubt disturbing, and will scare even the most jaded horror fan.
The Town That Dreaded Sundown
This is yet another early entry into the slasher genre, and is directed by Charles B. Pierce of “The Legend of Boggy Creek” fame. The movie is set up in docudrama fashion, and is downright terrifying for one good reason. It is a true story. These murders were committed in Texarkana, Arkansas back in the forties. The movie is chilling in spite of some poor attempts at humor during the lighter moments.
Frailty
This is much more recent and is Bill Paxton’s first entry into the horror genre. Wow, did he hit a homerun. The movie is about a man that is visited by an angel, and asked to eradicate some evil souls here on Earth. The man and his sons go through some true insanity as the evil souls turn out to be humans, and nobody knows if the Angel was real or imagined. Is he just insane or is he truly on a mission from God? Great movie.
Creep
Without a doubt this movie is among the most underrated flicks of all time in the horror genre. The movie is downright chilling, as a man is trapped in the London underground with a serial killer that is unlike any seen in movies before. The movie is absolutely spooky throughout and never loses the tension.
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
This movie has gained cult status among horror fans, and certainly you should check first to make sure your gift getter does not have it. If not, then this is an absolute must for any horror fan. The movie is based on the real life crimes of serial murderer Henry Lucas and Ottis Toole. The killings are incredibly graphic and this movie is not for the squeamish. It is powerful visually, but the real scare is in the details of the characters.
