Conventional Trolling Reels

There are literally hundreds of different reels available in the market today, mostly due to the advent of different materials and the use of cutting edge technology. With such a wide range of choices available, it is natural that one would be confused in choosing the right kind. It all depends on what kind of fish you want to catch, the size of the fish, the angling technique you would be using, and whether you would be trout fishing or bottom fishing.

For the vast majority of anglers, a conventional trolling reel with an adjustable casting control is the preferred choice. This type of reel would allow you to maximize your casting distance and improve your overall performance. A conventional reel comes with either a “star drag” or a “level drag” system. In the case of star drag systems, the pressure is increased or decreased, with the help of a star shaped wheel, and hence the name. Lever drag systems are also widely used, and are usually considered better for more consistent fishing performance, since they allow for more precise adjustments, as far as the drag goes. Another thing to look out for in conventional trolling reels are the ball bearings. Generally speaking, the more ball bearings there are, the more smooth the performance. A good gear ratio is determined again by your level of ability, when it comes to fishing. While novices can do with lesser gear ratios, veterans usually go in for two-speed reels. The reel frame is usually made up of graphite or aluminum. Whatever the material is, check for the balance and stability. Most of conventional reels come with built-in casting control systems, which help you determine the speed of the spool spin, while casting. Garcia, Daiwa, Okama and Avet are some of the leading brands of conventional trolling reels available in the market.
