Apple iTouch vs. iPhone

The world was at the hands of Steve Jobs when iPhone was released to the public in June. Apple devotees literally camped out of Apple stores all over the country to get a first hand glimpse and experience of what an iPhone really is. With all those rave predictions on how good the iPhone is, we forgot that it could actually make some calls. We wished there would be something like that without the phone function so that we don’t have to be tied up with phone contracts and all. Our wish was granted and man, it was fast! Less than three months after the release of iPhone, iTouch was introduced to the public. The initial price of these products was at $299 for 8GB and $399 for 16GB.

So now we have two cool gadgets almost identical with each other. But there are differences that you should know about. If you don’t have either of the gadgets, read on. If you have either one of these gadgets, read what you missed. If you have both gadgets, then definitely, you’re an Apple Geek.

Physical Appearance – The height and width of iPhone and iTouch are the same. You’ll still have that bar soap type appearance that iPhone has. iPhone has three physical controls: the power button, the home button, and lastly the volume control for you music and ear piece for accepting calls. The new iTouch will only have two of these functions. There will be no volume control, so you have to do it within the gadget. There’s also the dock for the earphone and dock to sync your files or to charge your device. In terms of thickness, iTouch is thinner.

iPhone Accessories, apple iphone
Functionality – Obviously, iTouch doesn’t have any functionality to call. But the interface has really changed in terms of the buttons. The only ones left are the browser, music, YouTube, video, library, contacts, to do list. You will also have the ability to purchase songs and albums you really love using the Wifi access for iTunes. That’s something iPhone can’t offer. You still need to sync the music you have in your computer. For whatever reason you don’t have a computer, iPhone will not work for you if you want to download some music.

Browser - Safari works the same in both gadgets. It still can’t support Flash or Java. But we’re hoping that Ajax or those cool web based programs will eventually flourish in Safari.

Music – Can’t really tell the difference. But if you compare them with the iPods, the sound of the iPods is better than these two gadgets.

Video – iTouch tends to be darker compared to iPhone. I think it’s an upgrade compared to iPhone. When you’re using the iPhone for movies, it’s brighter compared to iTouch. iTouch’s darker image makes it even clearer compared to the images projected by iPhone.

Picture – iTouch is clearer. No doubt about it.

So there are ups and downs between these two gadgets. But overall, you have to admit that if you have any of these gadgets, your music and video experience will never be the same again.

How about the battery with the ITouch does it last longer?

Comment by Lauren — November 25, 2007 @ 7:30 pm

what about the web access with this safari? Do you have to pay a montly fee to be able to browse the web with the Itouch? I assume if you want to browse with the Iphone you would have to pay a montly fee to your cell phone carrier?

Does the itouch have a FM tuner?

I got an iTouch for christmas, and I have to say it makes portable multimedia fun not just with the songs and videos you have, but with it’s built-in functionality. The screen is much better for movies than the classic.

This statement is misleading and makes no sense:

You will also have the ability to purchase songs and albums you really love using the Wifi access for iTunes. That’s something iPhone can’t offer.

The iPhone has Wifi, but you cannot buy music using Wifi on it. The iTouch has no Wifi at all. So.. what the hell is he talking about? It connects to the internet via the provider( Sprint, whatever )

Comment by Don D — January 21, 2008 @ 5:10 pm

Don D

I am not sure where you are getting your information, but if you check Apple.com or any other website providing specs and features of the iTouch, you will find that it definitely has WiFi. That is the purpose of having iTunes Wifi. No provider is needed. Just WiFi access (which is just about everywhere now). Just wanted to clarify.

don d, are you retarded? the itouch does have wifi on it…I’m on it right now

My itouch battery only lasts about three hours, is that normal?

Comment by Eron — January 29, 2008 @ 8:18 pm

So, I’ve had my iTouch about 2 weeks now and it is amazing. I compared it with a couple friends iPhones and the only option that the iPhone has over the iTouch is the fact that the iPhone has en external speaker. There are a few pieces of software out there that will let you VoiP on the iTouch as long as you jailbreak it, which is becoming easier and easier, and will continue to do so especially with the SDK coming out soon as well as Skype for it. It figures that the 32gb comes out 5 days after I purchase my 16gb, so I’m taking it back and trading up because 16gb goes fast, especially when movies and tv shows are the majority of my usage.

Are there attachments for fm tuner. I know they have attachment for fm transmitter. If they have fm tuner where can you buy.

Comment by bob — February 8, 2008 @ 5:56 pm

I also have a itouch and was wondering the same thing about the battery… is it normal that it only lasts a few hours?

Comment by ANdi — February 8, 2008 @ 7:18 pm

It is normal for IPhone to last about around 5 Hours for listening to music and the ITouch to last about 3 ( Smaller Battery)

I am getting a IPhone this week. Well GL With the Batteries. You can buy external Batteries at Batterygeek.com about 2 In wide by 3 In wide but adds 100 hours of Listening and 8 hours of Movies. They cost around 70 bucks though. That will solve the battery problem.

Dude. Itouch gives 6 hours of video on lowest brightness. I’m pretty damn sure you can listen to music for more than 3 hours.

Comment by Topo — April 6, 2008 @ 11:40 am

Well I’ve had my itouch since October. I’ve noticed that the battery goes by supper quick when I go on safari and watch movies. Other than that my batter can last me all day… even though its set on the brightest it can get. Just limit your usage of safari or videos if you want your batter to last a while.

Comment by Jessica — April 7, 2008 @ 12:18 am

Hey, I have a itouch and a iPhone. I think that the iPhone works better than the itouch. You can do so much more on the iPhone than the itouch. (SMS, phone calls, Internet, etc). Listen, why should you get the itouch that can only do alittle than to get a iPhone that can do everything.

Comment by Cleophas Bradley III — April 7, 2008 @ 5:47 pm

Would everyone stop calling it a goddamn “iTouch”? It’s called iPod touch. it’s an iPod. iTouch is something else, an entirely different company that has nothing to do with it. What the hell are you going to do when they all have touch capabilities?

Comment by txy — April 7, 2008 @ 9:29 pm

I had a ITOUCH (Who cares if it’s called Itouch/Ipod Touch)

Anyways..

I had a Itouch (32gig) stolen out of my house & I just bought another one. I have to admit..I was lost w/o it. I just replaced it w/ a 8gig for now..I’m saving to get the 32gig or better now. The features that it was got me hooked. Just think..A laptop on the go in ur hand, Download AND save videos on YOUTUBE, Also it has a BIGGER screen than the Ipod video 5th G. Even though mines is a 8gig.. It still satisfies you & the youtube alone is a UNLIMITED music/video resource for whatever which that alone makes the Itouch a dope experience, And SAFARI just BOOSTs the fun. I myself is a HAPPY customer of this dope ass MP3 player.

Comment by XxPAPO329xX — April 10, 2008 @ 9:58 am

First, iPhone has a speaker and microphone and iTouch doens’t. Second, iPhone has Bluetooth and iTouch doesn’t. I wish my “iPod Touch” had these features!

Comment by MM — April 17, 2008 @ 6:27 am

I’ve been searching everywhere but maybe someone can easily answer this on this here. When I purchase an iPod Touch, do I need to register it with AT&T or can I immediately use it with my present carrier, Sprint, right away and access the web, etc. From what I have been reading, there is no monthly access fees?

Comment by Vin — April 17, 2008 @ 11:36 am

Well, dude if you brought an Ipod Touch, you don’t have to register with AT&T, because the only people that register are those with the phone feature. AT&T is a phone company i think..(I live in Europe my whole life so i dunno exactly), and there are no monthly fee for your Ipod touch other than the fact if you are using it at home..you gotta pay for wireless internet service..still i wonder why do you need to register even with sprint if you have an ipod touch..are you sure you mean ipod touch and not iphone???
cuz if you have an iphone then yes you have to register…

Comment by Tzu — April 22, 2008 @ 10:39 am

You can actually connect your i-touch via bluetooth using any bluetooth enabled cellphone such as sprint for internet access. But unfortunetly, it can only be done while sleeping and dreaming about it. Iphones are the only touches that can actually be registered, and only with ATandT for now.

Comment by MR — May 23, 2008 @ 7:35 pm

if you have an itouch can u use ur phone for a modem? if you can do that is there any fees?

Comment by baboo — June 10, 2008 @ 5:09 pm

Oh man, I want the iPod Touch so fricking bad!!! I am saving up for it, but since I get 10 bucks a week for allowance and occasional babysitting jobs, its gonna take a while, and I hate waiting. Oh well, though. It WIL be worth it, I just know it. I can’t wait to jailbreak it too! I like the iTouch!!!! Pray that I get it fast!

Comment by Chase — June 12, 2008 @ 11:20 pm

To clarify any misconceptions, the only cell service capabilities can be accessed on iPhone, and cannot/will not be accessed through iPod Touch. We will not be adding cell support for the iPod Touch, as the only existing support is for iPhone & iPhone 3G. iPod Touch’s internet capabilities are only accessed through WiFi stations, whether they be personal routers, Starbucks Hot Spots, etc.
Thank you.

well austin, you need to go to meebo.com and that is an instant messenger where you can send text messages through your yahoo, aol or other instant message account. you recieve text messages only when sent to your instant message id. i would advise for you to advise all friends of yours to save your instant message id as a contact for much easier contact.

Hello.

I Live In England. My Sony Erricsson W580i Has Just Been Sent Into Repair For The 6th Time In 5 Months. I’ve Hardly Been Able To Use It As It Spend Most Of Its Life In Repair. Therefore I Am Looking Into Getting A New Phone. My Little Brothers Girlfriends Dad Has An iPhone. He Was Showing It To Me Erlier Today. I LOVED IT. So Obviously I Have Been Looking Them Up On The Internet For The Past 2 Hours. But, I Cannot Find Any Phone Shop That Has Them In Stock, Or On Pay As You Go. So Thats My Question.

Does Anyone Know Where There Are Any Of The iPhones In Stock On Pay As You Go.

Or Should I Get One Imported From USA.
Would This Be Worth While ??

PLEASE HELP

Mrs. Sampson, I suggest you go here to find your nearest Apple store or retailer that sells iPhones.

If you’ve been to most of those places already, they’re probably sold out :S

My Ipod touch last 12hr Str8 when using music, about 2hr -3hr when using the internet.

Comment by I-Man — August 24, 2008 @ 9:50 am

Please stop calling the iPod touch the “iTouch” - there is no such thing as an Apple iTouch. Another company makes a product by that name, and it’s a stupid error to perpetuate.

The correct name is “iPod touch”, with that exact spelling and capitalization.

What’s good people I got something to say do shut up and listen…I have been wanting and iPhone ever since the annoucment of the iPhone 3g but with me living in Chicago the arrival of the iPhone was hectic for about a month after the lanch. So I had to wait to get one. When the iPhone’s were in stock again I was in my college’s small town of Macomb which had no at&t store so I had to wait some more. My school did have an apple store though which sold iPod touches. I talked to one of the sales people there and said I wanted an iPhone but she told me that the iPod touch was the same as the iPhone but without phone capabilities. After thinking about I figured buying the. iPod would dave money than buying the iPhone …I’m writing this on my iPod touch or itouch right now and I have been loving this thing it’s fun it’s easy to use and 1 time payment of 230 is way better than month fee of 130 plus cost of an iPhone!

can you delete videos from the itouch itself? or do you have to sync it to the computer to delete videos?

Comment by azs911 — October 16, 2008 @ 2:24 am

you cannot delete videos from an Apple iPod touch.

Comment by touch — January 4, 2009 @ 1:02 am

No one cares about the “ZOMG it’s iPod touch” comments. The fact that people abbreviate iPod touch means it’s a product so prominent and popular that it’s going to stay around for good.

To answer some questions: yes the iPod touch is great. The battery life ranges from 3 to 4 hours on wifi or with gaming. For videos it’s around 6 hours. For music it’s 24+.

You can get third party programs on the app store.

No, there is no service fee.

Should you jailbreak it? I wouldn’t. You don’t need to jailbreak it to get out of at&t’s service. Also, you will void your warranty and even with a system restore, your installer.app program will show up on diagnostics. In otherwords, respect the limit apple put on your iPod touch and use it as a portable media player and not some flashy toy you show off to your friends.

Finally, the iPod touch is awesome, and yes, I did just post this entire message from my iPod touch.

Comment by CB — March 22, 2009 @ 2:30 pm

The name for it is iTouch. >.> not iPod Touch.

iPods are not the same as iTouches.

Comment by TC — April 1, 2009 @ 6:20 pm

If you can’t delete and add videos and music, what is the point? I don’t want to watch the same video over and over again.

Comment by JBS — April 6, 2009 @ 1:30 am

I am new to using another Apple,so if a few questions that i hope are answered and are not redundant:

1. The internet is free as long as I have or go anywhere with wifi availablity, correct? Would the applications for YouTube or directions need wifi, or can i access them without connecting to the internet?

2. If i want more applications to the iPod Touch, i need to purchase them off the internet?

3. Having never had an iPod, is this the one really worth what I plan on paying for it?

Thanks! :)

Comment by deeanne — April 8, 2009 @ 8:41 pm

All this craziness. A simple google search (and an understanding of technology) will answer the “wifi” question.

“WiFi” is the common term for IEEE 802.11b/g/n technology. Wireless networking for laptops, desktops, etc. It is also far too easy to misuse the term, as cellular phones are “wireless” i.e. radio but cellular technology is NOT 802.11.

An iPhone is a cellular phone device. It uses a UMTS/HSDPA and GSM/EDGE. It ALSO has 802.11b/g in it according to Apple’s iPhone spec sheet. One can purchase a data plan to get Internet over cellular, but with WiFi (802.11b/g) one can also sit in StarBucks and use a wireless access point to connect.

Cellular does NOT have an IP address (all that is translated at the telco to route cellular to internet). 802.11 devices are IP devices.

Think of your Linksys or AirPort wireless router/access point at home - that’s WiFi.

The iPod Touch has 802.11b/g but NO cellular technology (hence it is not a cell phone). You can sit at the same Starbucks and use their access point to hop on the Internet.

What the iPhone offers is Internet access (via two totally different technologies). 802.11b/g for use in a metropolitan area/college campus/home and cellular data plan for times when you are no in range of a wireless 802.11b/g access point (obviously you would need a strong enough cellular signal).

Cheers.

i have a first gen iTouch and can tell u it has wi-fi. the main diff from the iphone (other than the phone) is the missing camera. i would not even upgrade to a second gen iTouch for a speaker and external volume control. add the camera and i’ll pay up.

1. The internet is free as long as I have or go anywhere with wifi availablity, correct?
yes

Would the applications for YouTube or directions need wifi, or can i access them without connecting to the internet?

internet access needed

2. If i want more applications to the iPod Touch, i need to purchase them off the internet?

yes, via the app store included in the OS

3. Having never had an iPod, is this the one really worth what I plan on paying for it?

worth every penny!
