Home to six major aircraft manufacturing companies, it is no wonder that the biggest city in Kansas, United States, is also known as the “air capital of the world.” Wichita is also considered one of the top best big cities to live in. A fictional street named Elm Street in the outskirts of Wichita is known to be the home of cartoon character Dennis the Menace.
Wichita is located at the mystical juncture point of the Big and Little Arkansas rivers. The majestic figure of the”Keeper of the plains” overlooks the whole area. Once inhabited by the American Indians, this area has a rich past, which paved the path to a modern industrialized city in the years of the World Wars. Wichita still maintains and preserves many of its heritage sites, so it would not be a bad idea to start your tour of Wichita by going on a Western Heritage Tour.
The Western Heritage Tour
The Western Heritage Tour is a ten site tour which gives visitors an entertaining insight into the time of the development of the old west. Much of the elements of the time have been preserved as they were. The tours are available in five languages- English, Spanish, French, German and Japanese. The sites include Old Cowtown Museum, Indian Center Museum, Heritage of the West Gallery, Prairie Garden, Chisholm trail exhibit and historical marker and a few more. Included in this tour is Shepler’s, world’s largest western store, which sells mementos you can take back home.
Kansas African American Museum
Your next visit could be the Kansas African American Museum. This museum preserves thousands of artifacts which tells the story of African contributions in the history of Kansas. The museum is located in the Calvary Baptist Church, which is now listed in the National Register of Historical Places. The museum houses a number of examples of traditional and contemporary African and African American art.
Old Town Marketplace
A walk through the Old town Marketplace will again take you back to the past, when the area used to throb with business and activities. There are at least sixty historical buildings in the area. The area has been fully restored back to its old world grandeur, with brick lanes, historic lighting and raised boardwalks. It is a great place to spend time and have fun with family. The nightclubs, pub, restaurant, quaint retail shops, luxury hotels, special events, all add to the spark of the place.
The Ornate Architecture
The ornate architecture of Wichita Scottish Rite is the best place for conventions, meeting, wedding and such professional and personal events. This building has been part of Wichita’s history for one hundred years, and is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
If you are interested about wildlife and environment, then The Green Plains Nature Center is the place to be in. An interactive habitat hall, number of indoor programs and shows and a large park is part of the center. Come in contact with woodlands, prairies and wetlands in the park. Pets, bikes and skates are not allowed inside the park.
