Visit Pittsburgh: The Steel City

Pittsburgh is an exciting place to visit. It was originally known for its steel production, and also its bridges, but since the decline of the economy, the area has had to diversify somewhat. Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania and extremely well populated. The bridges still figure prominently in the area, but Pittsburgh is now known for health care, education, and financial services. Pittsburgh appears to be a place where much of the focus is on keeping the city and the environment clean. It has been rated as one of the top ten cleanest cities on Earth, and is much enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. There are a whole multitude of things to keep you busy and entertained when you visit the city, not least to explore some of the historic sites.

Whether you have our ticket in hand, or are merely thinking of paying Pittsburgh a visit later on, here are a few of the must-see attractions to view before you leave this wonderful city.

Carnegie Museum of Art

The Carnegie Museum of Art, was the first modern art museum in the United States, and was founded by Andrew Carnegie himself. There is an exact replica of the Greek Parthenon in the museum, and some of the largest plaster casts of the great masterpieces in the world today. The Carnegie Museum hosts the Carnegie Festival fairly frequently, so if you are around for that, it is a sight not to be missed. The museum itself has convenient opening hours, and plenty of attractions. There are facilities for eating and wheelchairs inside the main part of the museum. If you want to peruse some great pieces of art whilst learning a little about the artists, you have come to the right place. The curators will be happy to answer your questions for you.

Gateway Clipper

If you are intrigued by the interesting sounding name, the Gateway Clipper Fleet actually refers to boats, which cruise up and down the rivers surrounding Pittsburgh. The city is built where the three rivers meet, and so you can have a wonderfully interesting day cruising the Ohio, Allegheny, and Monongahela Rivers, in these spacious and luxurious boats. There are many types of cruise available including formal dinners, groups, and day trips. The boats are different in size, so be sure to choose one to suit you. This is a fantastic way to see Pittsburgh, and offers a fun-packed day for the whole family.

Kennywood

This wonderful theme park offers around 32 different rides that can be accessed via a general admission ticket. There are three wooden rollercoaster’s, and a number of steel ones if you have the stomach for them. The amusement park is famous for its French fries as much as its rollercoaster’s, so why not indulge whilst you have the opportunity? Kennywood is reasonably priced, but can get crowded on weekends and public holidays. There is wheelchair access and facilities for families with young children. If you are looking for a taste of the foundations of Pittsburgh, Kennywood will not be a disappointment.
