Walker Art Center
If you enjoy contemporary art, or are still making up your mind on the subject, the Walker Art Center is an ideal place to visit. This center is considered to be one of the five biggest centers which display modern art in America. Though it was originally a traditional art gallery, the shift towards the contemporary began in the 1940’s when a generous gift from a benevolent benefactor made the purchases of several great pieces possible. As you walk through the gallery, you will see sculptures by Picasso, Moore, and Giacometti as well as other important contemporary artists. The center is open year round for tourists, and is definitely worth a look.
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
When you visit the Walker Art Center, why not stop by its neighbor, the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden? There are around forty permanent pieces of art in the gardens with the centerpiece being a huge spoon with a cherry on it. The Spoonbridge and Cherry as it is officially known is actually a huge water fountain which is perfect if you are looking for a unique photo opportunity. Aside from the permanent works, temporary sculptures are moved in and out of the garden. There is a pedestrian bridge which locals and tourists cannot fail to marvel at, and indoor exhibits housed in the Cowles Conservatory. The Minneapolis Sculpture Garden isn’t the biggest, but it will provide you with both entertainment and a beautiful walk on a temperate day.
Hennepin Avenue
This main thoroughfare through Minneapolis is where you will find all the action and entertainment. It seems like all of the major sites have been built conveniently along this road. Technically, it is the dividing line between the northern and southern addresses of residents, but along Hennepin Avenue, you will find the famous Basilica of St. Mary and the Lumbar Exchange Center as well as the Walker Art Center. If you are looking for a nice night at the theater, or a special meal, Hennepin Avenue is where many of the world-class restaurants can be found. The Uptown Theater is quaint and unique, and a showcase for some of the Minneapolis talent.
If sports are your major interest, there will be many games of football, basketball, and baseball to attend. Sports are well-established in this close-knit city and enjoyed by all. Minneapolis is almost synonymous with creativity, so if you like an intellectual challenge, it is a wonderful place to visit.
