When you talk about taking a vacation during summer, there is no other state in the country more appropriate to experience the ultimate getaway than the state of Hawaii. Composed of eight islands, Hawaii can give you more than you ask for when it comes to having fun in the sand, sea and all the other attractions the island has to offer. Of all the islands, there is none that can compare to the biggest of them all, and this is Hawai’i or the Big Island.

The Big Island appeals to all kinds of travelers. Adventurers, newlyweds on a honeymoon, and friends who want to have a quick vacation will all have a place under the sun in this big island. What you see on TV, where people just go there to surf, swim and enjoy in their hotel accommodation is nothing compared to all the things that you can do there. This island is literally growing as you read this and you will know why in a little bit.
There are basically two parts in the island in terms of the activities that it offers. Hilo is on the western part of the island and Kona (Kilua-Kona) is on the eastern side. There’s a big difference between these contrasting sides of the island that you would think you are transferring from one world to another in just one island.
If you enjoy hiking, volcanoes or anything that relates to those kinds of activities, you have to go to Hilo first. Hilo is on the wet side of the island, and in this place you will find the always active Kilauea volcano. It’s because of this volcano that the island is literally getting bigger all the time. When you are there be sure to watch the molten lava flow. If you are not really into the hotness of the volcano, enjoy the snow on Mount Kea. This mountain is regarded as the tallest mountain if the measurement would be based from the ocean floor. There are hotels here but not as many as in Kona and its always serene and peaceful here.
Kona is the dry side of the Big Island. This is where you can see the beaches with great big hotels and people enjoying the sun. This is where you just want to kick back and relax with the magnificent view of the ocean without any worries of any kind. At night you can select from the many night activities this part of the island has to offer. You will burn more than a night to cover all the night life activities in this part of the island.
Hilo is about two hours away from Kona. That’s a very long drive if you are there for only two to three days and you wanted to enjoy everything that the Big Island has to offer. Stay at for least a week and you can never think you made a mistake in driving for two hours to enjoy the natural beauty of the island in Hilo and the fun, sunny side in Kona.
