Everybody knows that Pittsburgh is a sporting town what with the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates entertaining sports fans for decades and winning plenty of championships. As one might expect, there is plenty of sporting and recreational type activities to do in Pittsburgh as well. While visiting and traveling to Pittsburgh, you will have a ton of options at your disposal to get the heart pumping, and the adrenaline flowing. 1. One of the more popular things to do in Pittsburgh is to head out onto the three rivers for a bit of boating and fishing. Their are boats available to visitors to rent, as well as plenty of people willing to take you out fishing on the Great Lakes. Just make sure that you put on a jacket because it gets cold out there!

2. Biking is another popular past time in Pittsburgh as there are a number of great parks. Frick Park, Highland Park, and Schenley Park are among the many options here to get out and peddle your way to happiness. The trails in these parks are scenic to say the least and offer challenges for any level of bike rider. For those that are into long distance biking, there is a city bike route that covers the breadth of Pittsburgh.

3. Likewise, hiking is a popular activity in Pittsburgh. People love to get out in the wilderness and Pittsburgh has a number of hiking trails in their city and county parks. Depending on the season, hiking can be very daunting. In the Winter time, many of the trails in Pittsburgh actually become skiing trails. These trails are great for cross country skiing. Many people combine these two great activities during the winter months and get double the exercise. 4. Tennis is another popular activity in the Steel city. There are over 70 tennis courts throughout the area and you can play on them on a first come basis. Many of Pittsburgh’s courts require a permit, so be sure to check with the city before heading out to play.

5. If you love horses and like to ride, you might want to take advantage of the many horseback riding trails and stables around Pittsburgh. There is also racing horses and various other things to watch such as harness races at The Meadows.

6. If you are more of a watcher than a player, then have no worries. Pittsburgh is loaded with spectator sports. Among the professional sports teams available are the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL, The Pittsburgh Pirates in MLB, and the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL. All of these teams are great fun to go watch and cheer on in Pittsburgh, and are among the more respected franchises in the United States. If college is more your style you could always go see a college sporting event.
