Trinidad and Tobago form an archipelagic state which essentially means a small cluster of islands. The islands are located in the Caribbean, and neighbor Barbados and Grenada. Though you might be envisioning the local people sitting on the beach singing reggae songs, the truth of the matter is that the islands are very much industrialized, and have an economy of their own. Trinidad is by far the larger of the two islands, and contributes over 90% of the landmass and population. Caroni Bird Sanctuary
This wonderful sanctuary is made up of thick, dense vegetation which surrounds some pretty lakes and canals. The flora and fauna is much more varied than you might expect for the location and climate, and the walks around the sanctuary are fascinating if you like to explore. You can get guided tours pretty inexpensively here, and the guides will take you to see the national bird of Trinidad and Tobago, the scarlet ibis. If you want to stay out of the sun, there are several spots alongside the swamp where the mangroves have grown across to form arches. The sights in this sanctuary really have to be seen with your own eyes to believe the splendor and beauty in this spectacular area. Guided tours are available year round, though reservations are sometimes necessary.
Maracus Bay
This pretty little beach is a tourist hot-spot, and a local favorite. One of the nice things about the beach is the variety of activities you can try here. The bay is on the Northern range, but is only a short drive, and definitely worth putting gas in your car for. Though the beach is somewhat crowded on nice days, you will enjoy the friendly and happy atmosphere as children play together, and you watch the tropical rainforest behind the beach. If you get tired of sunning yourself, you have the option of exploring this forest or looking for some wonderful island food. The delicacy here is seasoned shark fillets which are fried by locals and then doused in every condiment you can imagine.
Port of Spain
This is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, and offers a colorful and exciting view of island life. If you are looking to pick up some interesting trinkets to take home for friends and family, this is the place you will find something interesting and inexpensive. Port of Spain is the location of the annual carnival, many of the local markets, and is also the site where administration is undertaken for the whole of the Caribbean. When you visit the area, Port of Spain is a definite must-see destination.
