The Algarve, which is located on the southernmost tip of Portugal, is an expansive region which houses some of the best tourist hot spots Europe has to offer. Tavira Island
This stunning little island is the site of the best beaches that the Algarve has to offer. You will board a ferry to gain access to the island, and can spend the day either relaxing on the beautiful sandy beaches, or enjoying the beauty of the scenery. Tavira Island is part of the nature reserve known to locals as Ria Formosa, and the bird watching here will tempt even the most seasoned of hobbyists. If you do not fancy the ferry, there is a floating bridge you can use as a wonderful alternative. The island is home to a naturist beach, so caution should be used if you have children. All in all, this scenic island is one of the most remarkable tools in the Algarve’s crown, and will offer an exciting day out for the whole family.
Silves Castle
This wonderful little castle which was built on top of a hill by the Arabs, offers a splendid place for a day out. The castle was not built in the traditional shape; in fact, the foundations show the shape to be an irregular polygon. Tourists are invited to walk across the great wall between the three towers, and access is available to the inner castle. There is much evidence of the Arab occupation, in that a silo still stands. The silo was used to store large amounts of cereals. This is a magical trip for the whole family, and the Portuguese are more than happy to explain the mystique which still surrounds the castle.
Episcopal Palace
This magnificent little palace which is located in Faro faces the cathedral in the old part of the city. Though it is termed a palace, the architectural design is extremely simple and representative of the plain style commonly found in and around the Algarve area. The most fantastic part of the palace is the collection of tiles on the inside. Visitors express a real love for the contrast between the dour architecture and the splendor of the inside. There are art collections on the inside which are available for public viewing year round. If you fancy a break from the golf and the beaches, Episcopal Palace will be an interesting and exciting place to visit.
