Places to Visit in San Antonio: Gateway to the South

San Antonio, Texas is a huge and lively city. It is one of the top ten largest cities in America, and has an ever-expanding population. The metropolitan area alone is home for at least two million people, and it is still growing rapidly. There is plenty to do in San Antonio if you want to escape the brutal heat of the summer. Not only is this city culturally and historically significant, it is also modern, friendly, and packed chock full of activities for visitors to enjoy.

River Walk

This walk is known for being the jewel in San Antonio’s crown. You can mosey down the San Antonio River on foot and explore a very scenic and interesting walk. The walk itself is scenic and picturesque and surprisingly lively. There are shops, restaurants, and energy-packed bars for you to rest in as you make the trek. You will be one level down from the street, but you will feel a million miles away. The Fiesta San Antonio is held in this part of town in springtime and is a much celebrated event by locals and tourists alike. The River Walk adjoins many other premium tourist spots and is a must-do activity when you visit San Antonio.

The Alamo

This is the premium attraction for visitors in search of some Texan history. This great old building is now a museum, but has great cultural and historical significance in American warfare. The Spanish Empire constructed the building originally, and it was used initially as a fortress compound. This was one of the biggest battle sites in the war named “The Battle of the Alamo” and there is much of the museum dedicated to educating visitors about this, and the other battles between Texas and Mexico during the revolution. The museum is often crowded and open year round. It is well worth a visit, and provides tourists with multiple photograph and educational opportunities.

Cathedral of San Fernando

This is the oldest cathedral currently in use in the United States today. It is famous in the Roman Catholic Church for being the parent church of the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The building itself is spectacular to look at and to view from the inside. The cathedral is featured on the National Register of Historic Places in the country, and whether you practice the religion or not, a fantastic place to visit. There is some really spectacular architecture to look at, and many features to look at, both inside and outside the church itself.

San Antonio is a lively and colorful city to visit. It definitely will not disappoint when it comes to sport and entertainment, and is well-known as a friendly place to visitors. If you want to check out sports or theater, book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
