Rock Springs, Wyoming is a historically interesting place to visit. Though it is in essence a tiny little place, it was the site of the notorious Rock Springs massacre which occurred in 1885. The massacre itself was one of the worst racially motivated attacks in history. Many white miners slaughtered their Chinese co-workers in a riot, which killed 28 and forced many more to leave the town. In recent years, Rock Springs has been better known for it’s more positive attributes; there are a number of oil wells and gas reserves in the area which are now being utilized to boost the economy of the area. If you are interested in visiting a small and friendly place which houses many historical artifacts, Rock Springs is an excellent choice of destination.
Whether you have visited Rock Springs before and are looking for some new sites to visit, or if this will be your first time in the area, here are some of the best tourist attractions to keep you entertained during your stay.
Rock Springs Historical Museum
Rock Springs was originally a little mining town, so it is apt that a large portion of this museum is devoted to the history of coal mining. There are many interesting and educational artifacts on display, and you cannot help but be impressed by the friendliness and knowledge of the staff that are proud of their cultural heritage. The general history of the area is also presented through a whole range of exhibits, and the museum is open year round for your enjoyment and convenience. Admission is free, which makes this an even better day out for tourists.
Killpecker Sand Dunes
If you want to play some serious sand games in the largest sand box you have ever seen, the Killpecker sand dunes will be the place to head for. Though you would not expect to find an African type desert in Wyoming, there is abundant space here to do whatever you like in the sand. Most often, local people congregate here to show off their new desert toys, and take them rolling around the dunes. However, in addition to the sand, there are the remnants of an ancient volcano in the nearby vicinity called Boar’s Tusk. This volcano remnant is one of only two geological features that can presently be found in the whole state, so the area in itself is an interesting place to visit, and take pictures of.
The Wild Horse Tour
Wyoming and Rock Springs in particular, are well-known for having an abundance of wild horses that graze freely in this sparsely populated area. If you are interested in seeing them, there are plenty of tours which can take you not only to the horses, but past some of the historic sites in Rock Springs and beyond. Though the vegetation of the area might not seem conducive to abundant wildlife, you will be surprised how much you find. The Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce will be able to offer you information as to what times the tours start, and what your options are.
