Places to Visit in Mumbai - The City Where the Bollywood Stars Hang Out

Mumbai, India is one of the most densely populated and multi-cultural cities in the world. If you haven’t heard of it, it might be because it used to be known as Bombay. One of the reasons for the dense population is that Mumbai attracts tourists, business people, and performers alike. In the center of the city, huge headquarters of some large global companies can be found. Bollywood is the Indian version of Hollywood where all of the great performers are born. The harbor of Mumbai accounts for almost half of all of India’s maritime trade, and handles a great portion of its maritime cargo. Mumbai might not be the first place you think of when you are planning a vacation, but it is a colorful and rich city.

Elephanta Caves

One of the most interesting sites you will see in Mumbai is that of the Elephanta caves. These caves, which are located on Gharapuri Island near Mumbai, are full of statues, carvings, and scriptures which give some insight into the colorful past of Mumbai and India. The caves have been dated to as far back as the 9th Century by historians, and many of their contents are depictions of Brahma, Mahesh, and Vishnu, who collectively make up the Trinity. The caves themselves include a main temple, courtyards, and shrines. This wonderful and truly unique place is somewhere you will not want to miss out on before you go home.

Jenangir Art Gallery

If you are looking for a fabulous and free art gallery which portrays Indian art at it’s finest, this is the place to visit. The place is monstrously huge, and portrays the renaissance of Indian art in a fine way. There is a main museum, and four subsidiary halls which attract tourists in their droves. The café at the art gallery is beautiful, ornate, and serves a wide menu of fine Indian cuisine. The oldest licensed dealers of antiques are also found in this museum, and are well worth a visit if you are looking to take home a souvenir of your visit.

Mahim Fort

This ancient fort which was originally constructed by the first governor of Bombay overlooks the Mahim Bay. It was built initially in order to keep watch for Portuguese insurgents, and was a part of the well-known castle of Bombay. At its finest moment, this fort was home to more than 30 canons, and 100 soldiers, but has more recently become part of the Indian slums. The Mahim Fort is well worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Mumbai, which was previously known as Bombay. Though the fort itself is somewhat dilapidated through damage from residents and poor upkeep, when you see it you cannot help but be impressed with the structure and finesse with which it was built. You can see the Mahim Fort anytime, and also get a taste of some of its history from some of the nearby local people. The area definitely provides an excellent photograph opportunity.
