Places to Visit in Liverpool - European Culture Capital

The European Culture Capital of 2008 is the city of Liverpool in Merseyside, United Kingdom. Liverpool is known for its music, sport and nightlife. Liverpool is home to the famed Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the birthplace of world famous musicians like The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Echo and the Bunnymen and many more. The city is well- known as a maritime center and is also the home to the largest number of nationwide museums after London. It also boasts of Europe’s oldest Chinatown. A visit to this beautiful city could be an overwhelming experience.

The legendary Liver Birds sit atop the Royal Liver Building by the riverside. The Beatles Story at Albert Dock is the only museum in the world dedicated to the Beatles and only Beatles. Space Port is an interactive science museums catering to kids, young adults and adults as well.

Other places worth visiting are Williamson’s Tunnels Heritage Site, Liverpool cathedral, St. Nicholas and Our Lady Church, Speke Hall, Croxteth Hall and the Princess Road Synagogue.

If you love water rides, you can have a fun day out on the Mersey ferries. You can also take a tour on the YellowDuckmarine, a WWII landing craft painted bright yellow, and get a different view of Liverpool.

If you enjoy comedy, then you may add up to your itinerary a tour to one of the comedy shows that take place mainly in weekends.

If you have some time in hand, manage to visit and listen to the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. There are quite a few theaters which host a number of shows regularly.

Liverpool will not disappoint the foodies, as there are many pubs and restaurants offering various cuisine in the city. City Centre and Lark Lane are the two main areas where most of the restaurants are situated. Quynny’s Quisine at City Centre offers Caribbean food, while Kimos offers Arabic and western food. The Tea House is known for cheap tasty Chinese meals, while Piccolino’s offer Italian food and wine. Apart from these, there are of course a number of big and small restaurants offering lip smacking British cuisine. Liverpool has taken a major step in reviving the tradition of cask ale, so try to taste some authentic British beer when at Liverpool.
