Places to Visit in Dallas, Texas: The Oily City

Dallas is one of the top ten largest cities in America, and the third largest city that Texas has to offer. Though Dallas is well-known for its oil production, cotton industry, and telecommunications innovations, you might also be surprised to learn that it is a great place to visit. Dallas offers plentiful activities in the lively city center. There are historic landmarks as well as modern amenities, making this a fantastic city for the whole family.

Dallas Museum of Art

This impressive museum houses collections from some of the worlds leading artists. Amongst the highlights, there is the Hamon Building collection and the Reves collection, both of which are prominent parts of the museum. There are many famous paintings and sculptures to be seen here from impressionist to early modernist works. The Dallas Museum of Art also has a decorative collection, which includes European carpets, Chinese porcelain, and rare books. This is a fabulous place to visit, particularly if you want to learn a little as you peruse the exhibits. The museum is open daily for your convenience, and has facilities for children and wheelchairs.

Dallas Zoo

This expansive zoo, which was first opened in 1888, is the largest and best Texas has to offer. There are two major sections of exhibits at the zoo, Wilds of Africa, and Zoo North. The more traditional exhibits are housed in Zoo North, such as the elephants, cheetahs, and rhinos. However, the big excitements are to be found along a wooded trail on the other side of the zoo. The nature trail is a wonderful walk which passes the chimps, crocodiles, and gorillas. The Dallas Zoo is most famous for its successful breeding program of saddle-billed storks and okapi. If you prefer not to make the walk, you can see it from up high on the monorail system that goes around the zoo. The zoo itself makes for a fine and pleasant day out which will interest the whole family.

Deep Ellum

Deep Ellum is known for being the premium jazz and blues sites of the South. Since the early 1900’s Deep Ellum has housed and made famous musicians such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Bessie Johnson. The whole area rapidly became the home of many jazz and blues clubs and also punk bars. If you are looking for a nice meal featuring some lively and interesting entertainment, Deep Ellum will have something to suit your taste. There are many live music spots which go right back to the grass roots of this soulful and melodic music. The artistic atmosphere of the area has caused many art galleries to set up shop; the whole combination of art and music make for a colorful and fine spectacle. Visiting this area will make for a unique and exciting experience that you won’t find anywhere else on the planet.
