Fun under the South Carolina Sun

South Carolina is located in the southern coast of the United States of America and is one of the busiest states in US. It proudly boasts of its rich historical and cultural heritage. During the American Revolution, it was one of the 13 colonies to have signed the Declaration of Independence. South Carolina is also identified as the founding state of the Confederate States of America. With that history, there is no wonder why people are drawn to this state.

For the historically inclined, there are many places to go. There’s the Abbeville Opera House in the County of Abbeville. The Opera House is the only remaining “hemp house” in the state. The term “hemp house” refers to the use of hemp ropes in the rope-set system to raise and lower the theater’s backdrops and curtains.

In the county of Charleston, tourists will find the Middleton Place. It is an 18th century rice plantation, which is also the home of the oldest landscaped garden in America. If people want to witness a plantation in its old, self-sustaining days, they will appreciate the reenactments done by craftsmen and women in the Plantation Stableyards. Visitors will be taken on guided house tours that bring to surface the Middleton’s important role in the history of America.

Since history is not everyone’s cup of tea, there are other sights and attractions for visitors to enjoy. For extreme sports fanatics, the Chattooga River offers whitewater rafting. The river starts in North Carolina and passes through the border of South Carolina and Georgia. The best time to experience the river is during the Spring and early Summer when the water levels are at their highest. For those who wish to stick to a slower rafting pace, they can always go to the Chattooga during late Summer and Fall.

For families, it would be perfect to head to the Family Kingdom Amusement Park in Myrtle Beach. The Family Kingdom Amusement Park has many rides to offer like the Slingshot Drop Zone, Swamp Fox Roller Coaster, and the antique Carousel. As of 2008, the Park has a total of 30 rides, 17 of which are especially made for kids. And the fun doesn’t stop there! Right across the street is the Family Kingdom Water Park. It has a variety of water rides that both parents and kids can enjoy. The Amusement Park is open from April to September while the Water Park is open starting June until September. Families will be happy to know that Myrtle Beach has its own airport so accessibility is not a problem.

The State of South Carolina is a wonderful mix of the past and the present. It is also proud of the developments that have come its way. This is evident in the way the state tries to preserve what’s left of its history but at the same time also tries to promote all the new things to be enjoyed. It will not be a surprise if more and more people will come to appreciate what South Carolina has.
