Estonia - A Historic Baltic Country

Located in Northern Europe, the Republic of Estonia has a rich history and past with a culture and friendly people unlike anywhere else in the world. Its colorful past is dotted with an intermingling of various other cultures, including the Swedes, Russians, Danish, and Germans. Because of its strategic location right in between the West and the East, Estonia was often sought by conquerors and kings throughout history.

Today, this small country has much to offer for the discerning traveler. Its people are among the oldest in Europe; having been ruled by other lands only brought together a unique mix. The people are a blend of many cultures and traditions in one. The country’s size allows one to move from one end of Estonia to another in just a few hours, as it has a total area of just 45,000 square kilometers.

The capital of Tallinn is the most popular destination for tourists in Estonia. Here you will find medieval architecture and churches that have been well-preserved. Aptly called Old Town, the location is a UNESCO World Heritage site as well. Its charming cobblestone streets are a delight to wander around during late afternoons, and some streets are lined with quaint little Estonian cafes.

The medieval churches of the Old Town are among the most fascinating in Europe. St. Olav’s church, which is also the tallest medieval church in all of Europe, dates as far back to 1267. Legend has it that the church was built to lure more merchants into the city, although little is known about this intriguing church. The lower area of the Old Town houses some interesting structures, including the oldest pharmacy in Europe that still stands on its original location. The Town Hall Pharmacy was built in the early 1400’s, and sells modern medications while retaining its historical charm and architecture.

The Tallinn Town Hall is considered by many to be the most well-preserved Medieval town hall in Europe, but despite the reconstruction it had to go through, still resembles life and design as it was built back in the 1400’s. It’s gothic shapes and interiors lure visitors who want to experience unique Gothic architecture in a structure used for town meetings. The Town Hall houses a Citizen’s Hall, a Council Hall, a chancery, and a small kitchen.

Another interesting tourist spot in the Lower Town of Tallinn is the House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads. It is a famously preserved Renaissance building which was used for the group of the Brotherhood of Blackheads. The brotherhood, formed in 1399, was a gathering of the city’s merchants as well as merchants coming from other countries. The building’s façade is decorated in a Dutch renaissance theme, while the interiors and exteriors have fascinating intricate carvings and ornaments.

Estonia offers the traveler a wide range of accommodations to suit every budget. Visitors can choose from charming bed and breakfasts, guest apartments, hostels, and guesthouses, but if the budget permits it there are also many luxurious hotels. For the more adventurous, Estonia has a number of camping sites as well.
