If you have a child, there is going to come a time when he or she is going to want to learn how to swim. As a parent, you might not be too sure about how to teach your child to swim. It is unlikely that you remember how your own parents taught you how to swim years ago, so you might not even know where to begin. Here are some tips for teaching your child to swim.
Swim Lessons
Begin swim lessons for your child at a very young age. Even if you are going to assist in providing swim lessons for your child later on, it is important to keep in mind that a swim instructor is going to be the best option. They will be able to teach your child better than you will and will also be CPR certified, so they know what needs to be done in the event of an emergency. Most local pools, the YMCA, and certain day camps offer swim lessons for young children.
Getting Past Fears
Some children may have a hard time attempting to learn to swim because they are afraid of the water. Encouraging your child to continue taking swim lessons despite any fears that they may have is the only way to effectively ensure that your child will continue swimming. Be sure to tell your child’s swim instructor that they are afraid and they will probably know a way to help them overcome their fears.
Explain Safety
It is important to let your child know that swimming can be somewhat dangerous. Explain to your child that they should never go in a pool without a parent, swim instructor, or other adult who they are familiar with present. When you explain swimming safety to your child, it is a good idea to make sure that you do not say it in such a way that your child is going to become frightened to ever enter a pool. Try to explain it the same way that you would explain that your child should never pet a strange dog. Do not yell, simply warn.
Recreate the Lessons
You may be able to ask the swim instructor if you can sit in on a lesson or two to find out what type of techniques they are using to teach your child. While you are at home or at the public pool with your child, you may be able to recreate the swimming lessons on your own. This is a good way to ensure that your child’s method of learning does not get broken. Remember that you should become CPR certified if you are planning to teach your child at home or at a location where lifeguards will not be on duty.
Most children will want to learn at a fairly young age. These are just a few of the different things that you can do to ensure that your child is able to learn more easily. A swimming instructor is the best thing that you can invest in to ensure that your child will be able to swim safely in the future.
