How to Remove Window Tint

There are several reasons why a person would want to tint the car windows. One, tinting helps keep the glare from the sun from being unbearable. Second, they might want to keep their faces from being seen from the outside.

Applying a tint is a very easy job. In contrast, removing it can be a bit difficult but certainly time-consuming. That is why most people would resort to enlisting the help of a professional in removing the tint in their car windows. It saves them time, since almost all car owners are working professionals themselves that their time off on Sundays are spent resting. These people would probably not want to eat up a considerable time removing the tint from their car windows.

window-tintRemoving the tint from your car window by yourself can actually save you a lot of money, as much as US$50 to US$100 in fact. This money can go off to other more important expenses, or could go to savings. It is actually a very simple yet meticulous task, which could be another reason why car owners shy from doing the task themselves.

The Materials

To remove the tinting from your car window, you would need a few materials. These materials include a single-edged razor, a clean rag, a spray cleaner or ammonia, and a few large garbage bags as well as a 0000 steel wool. You would also need a tarp to protect the upholstery inside your car from the residue.

The Process

The tricky part in the process of removing your tint is the fact that the tinting is made up of two layers. This also makes the process very long because the second layer unfortunately sticks to the surface of the glass. It is important to be able to get the two layers off the glass in just one peeling, or else you’re in for a world of hurt. You would’ve to manually remove the remaining layers using the razor, doing which could result to scratches on your windshield.

In order to remove the two layers safely and quickly, you would need to loosen the adhesive that keeps them and the glass together. This is what you need the ammonia for.

First, cut the plastic garbage bags so that they are the same size and shape of the front and rear windows. Apply water over the outside of the two windows, then cover them with the garbage bags. The ammonia will be used on the inside of the windows, after which you will use the garbage bags again to cover them.

Take note, do not inhale the ammonia as it will have undesirable effects. You can either hold your breath if you can do so for long periods, but you can always get yourself a mask to keep the ammonia from being inhaled. Keep the upholstery inside covered while you remove the tint.

Leave the car as is for an hour, then you can start peeling the tint. Go slowly, and keep the garbage bag over the windows so the ammonia does not evaporate. If the ammonia shows signs of drying up, spray more of it as you remove the film. After the film is removed, all you need to is to scrub off the adhesive with ammonia and a steel wool.
