How To Make A Toy Parachute

Toy parachutes are a ton of fun and they are remarkeably easy to make. This fun craft idea is actually one that any age can enjoy. The best part is that no two toy parachutes are alike, as each one will be decorated and fly differently. If you are facing a rainy day game with the kids, here is how to build your very own toy parachute step by step for hours of fun and adventure!

The first thing you will do is to gather an old handkerchief, or a piece of any light fabric. The fabric must be at least as light as a handkerchief, but the size is flexible. Ideal for this particular part of the handkerchief is a plain old white one, but any color will do. This part will serve as the toy parachute itself.

Next you will take that handkerchief and decorate it any way that you like. Some people like to use crayons, but magic markers work much better. Be sure to place something under the handkerchief so that the magic markers will not seep through onto the table. Some cool toy parachute themes include pirates, clouds, camoflauge, and anything else that your child is crazy about. Take the time to fix the parachute up nice and it is that much more fun when it is flying through the air.

The next thing you will need is four strips of fishing line in equal lengths. The length of the strips is variable, but you should shoot for around the length of a ruler. These will be the parachute cords. Fishing line is the ideal thing, but string will work. Make sure that the cords are all the same length for your toy parachute or it will not fly correctly.

Next, you will need to cut a tiny hole in each of the corners of your handkerchief. Make sure that you leave space for the corners to remain strong. Do not put the tiny holes too close to the edges of the handkerchief or you will find that they will rip through after a couple of flights. Once you have these holes done, then tie off the four strings to the corners using the holes.

The other ends of the strings will then need to be attached to a cork. A large cork is ideal, but you can also use little army men, or wrestling men, or even a really light Barbie. Anything that is not so heavy that it will overpower the light handkerchief will work. Trial and error works best here. Take the time to try several items and you will find the one that works best.

At this point, your toy parachute is ready to test out. Climb up on a chair or table (with mom or dad’s supervision only) and toss the parachute off. It should drift to the floor like a real parachute. Obviously the toy parachute will fly better outside if it is not overly windy. The ideal way to play with the toy parachute is to go out to an open field and throw it way up in the air. This is great fun for an afternoon with your child. The parachute will fly remarkeably well if you are careful about weighting it properly. If the toy parachute is falling straight to the ground, then the cork is too heavy.

Give this excellent craft idea a try and you might just find something that your kids will love for years to come. Experiment with different combinations and designs for your toy parachutes and keep a record of those that fly the best.
