Gas prices are reaching an all time high in most areas of the country and that means that many are forced to conserve their fuel because of financial burdens. Believe it or not, there are things you can do to improve your gas mileage and fill up less often other than just not driving. If you drive smart and follow some of the tips below, you’ll find the gas bill less damaging to your wallet. These tips may not cut your car gas bill in half or even a fourth, but every little bit helps.
Change the way you drive

If you consider yourself a “road rager” than you can probably bet that you aren’t driving very sensibly and are wasting some of your hard earned money on additional fuel. When you accelerate quickly, brake hard and speed you are wasting more gas than if you accelerate and brake at regular speeds. Not only is this more safe but it’s definitely more fuel friendly and also better on your vehicle. All cars are different but observing the posted speed limit is generally going to improve your gas mileage and save you some money at the pump. Depending on how excessive you are in this area, you can find a great deal of savings by slowing down and driving safe. Another way you can influence your fuel consumption is by removing any extra weight from your vehicle that isn’t needed. This is definitely not going to show dramatic swings when you fill up for gas but the extra weight has somewhat of a negative impact on your gas mileage. Don’t waste your gas by idling your engine while waiting for something. When you idle, you are completely wasting gas and depending on the size of your car and engine, it can be pretty significant. Take advantage of some of your cars fuel saving features. Many cars are equipped with cruise control that will help you maintain a constant speed on the highway, which is known to improve gas mileage. Some cars also have overdrive gears which help you at higher speeds. Overdrive gears help your gas mileage as well as reduce the amount of wear on your engine.
Your car’s role in saving fuel
Many people don’t realize it but how well you maintain your car can have one of the biggest impacts on how much gas you waste. If your car is in proper working order, it will more efficiently use gas but if your car is in need of a major tune up, chances are it is wasting some gas. Here are a few car maintenance tips that will help you attain that gas mileage claim that was posted on the window when you bought it.
- Get a tune up – Your car’s engine may be giving or receiving faulty information that can seriously waste a lot of gas.
- Air filters – When your engine receives the appropriate amount of air and fuel, you will get the best possible gas mileage. If your air filters are clogged and dirty, you won’t get the right combination of air and fuel.
- Tire Pressure – If your tires are a little low, it can have a negative impact on your gas mileage. You will also find yourself having to replace those tires much sooner which can be just as pricey as gas due to petroleum price increases.
Another option you have when choosing to conserve fuel is looking for a more efficient vehicle. Hybrids are becoming more and more popular and some can easily reach 40-50 mpg. A new car can be expensive but over time, you may make up the difference in your gas savings.
