Five Great Guard Dog Breeds

The dog has been used over the years for a number of different purposes. Some are used for hunting, some are used for retrieving, and some are just good old family pets. Another very common trait that a dog owner looks for is protection. Guard dogs are a very effective means of protecting your home and family. Though no dog can protect you in every situation, most burglars will move on from a house that has a guard dog. With that said, here are the top guard dog breeds that you can pursue:

The German Shepard - The German Shepard has been used as a great guard dog for a very long time and it is easy to see why. Not only are the effectively trainable, and of a good size, but they are also gentle with the family around them. German Shepard dogs are at or near the top of most police dog lists for those same reasons. The German Shepard makes a wonderful guard dog.

The Rottweiler - The Rottweiler has one thing going for it that most guard dogs do not have. Incredible size. The Rottweiler will scare most any burglar away in a second, and it is not shy about letting one of those cannon barks out when it senses someone on the property. The Rottweiler is also a very loyal family dog as well if it is trained properly.

The Doberman - The Doberman is probably the most notorious of the guard dogs, if for no other reason than its tenacity. This dog will pursue someone doggedly (no pun intended) until they are either far away from the property or dead. Though it is a very loving dog with it’s owner, the Doberman has been known to be snappy with them as well. Effective training can cure this in most cases, however.

The Bullmastiff - Now this is a dog that would send a burglar running for sure. The Bullmastiff is no joke when it comes to size or vocalization. Oddly, the Bullmastiff is actually a very gentle breed on thee whole. Still, it is a dog that has massive power and great instincts as a guard dog.

The Pit Bull - Though this dog is notorious for being a vicious animal, the truth is they are misunderstood. While certainly they can be very aggressive, the largest number of cases are because they were trained in that way. The pit bull is not born with a bloodlust. That is put their by unscrupulous owners. The pit bull is a loyal, loving, and easy going pet if you raise them in the right way. Still, they are extremely protective of their owners and property and care should be taken if you choose to own one. Children and pit bulls are sometimes dangerous, and worth considering before you bring one into the home.

Having a good guard dog is a very good way to deter crime in your home, but you should take great care to get the right breed for your family. It is also highly advised that you raise your guard dog from a puppy so that they grow up knowing who is the alpha dog in the home. Bringing in a guard dog later in their development can sometimes be a very bad idea.
