The English Bulldog is used as a common symbol for many famous organizations including the US Marines and Yale University. Today they are nothing like the original breed that started in Britain as a descendant of the mastiffs brought by the Roman conquerors. The behavior of the English Bulldog today is nothing like the original breed and it is now a very sweet and gentle breed.
They are a medium sized dog with a body that is low-swung and thick. The typical English Bulldog is between fourteen and fifteen inches tall with a weight between 40 to 55 pounds with males weighing slightly more than females.

The most prominent feature of this breed is their skull which is large and square which equals the height of the dog at the shoulders in circumference. The muzzle is extremely short with a flat forehead. The lower jaw protrudes quite a distances from the upper jaw while turning up slightly in the front.
Cesarean sections during pregnancy are common with this breed of dog since their broad shoulders are bigger than their rear end which makes whelping puppies rather difficult.
Typically they have a kind, resolute and courageous temperament. Very rarely are they aggressive or vicious, rather they are typically calm and dignified. They also have a peculiar gait in which they have a sidewise shuffling motion due to their muscular structure.
In addition to the problems giving birth, the structure of the English Bulldog also causes other health issues. This includes respiratory problems and skin irritations in the skin folds of the face and tail. Other less common health issues that can occur include eyelid abnormalities, hip dysphasia, congenital heart disease, heart attacks and skin conditions.
For a quiet household the English Bulldog is ideal since they require only moderate exercise and minimal grooming. They are very loyal to their family and protective if it is necessary, but perfectly happy to live a quiet life. They are a good-natured dog that are often easy to train and guide towards any specific goals the individual would like them to attain. They are also a good dog breed for those who won’t have a lot of time to exercise or spend with their dog every day.
