Sometimes, humans tend to take dogs for granted. These animals are actually heaven sent; there is a reason why dogs are called “man’s best friend.” Aside from just being cute and fun to play with, dogs have an enormous on us humans, ranging from physical, emotional, psychological, and even social benefits. They are fierce guard dogs, loyal companions, and love their masters unconditionally.
Owning a pet dog has several physical benefits for humans. Research has shown that dog owners generally have lower blood pressure than those who do not own a dog, reducing the need for medication and drugs. These lovable animals have the uncanny ability to decrease tension and stress, two major things that lead to elevated blood pressure. A person who has a pet dog is also more likely to get more exercise. Other activities needed to sustain a dog, such as grooming, feeding, bathing, and generally playing with them provides a great work-out.
Dogs have significant therapeutic value too. It is almost impossible to feel lonely with these loving companions. Studies have shown that the elderly living in nursing homes feel less lonely when they had doggie visitors, and that elderly people who own dogs tend to live longer. On the other hand, other studies show that survivors of life-threatening illnesses such as heart attacks have a much higher chance of survival when surrounded by a pet dog. Dogs are also proven to significantly contribute to the overall well-being of patients who are healing from trauma and depression, the reason why it is not uncommon to see dogs being used for their therapeutic value in nursing homes, clinics, and hospitals around the United States.
Humans with pet dogs also tend to have better social skills, especially those who grew up with them. Children who are pet owners at a young age learn valuable life lessons at a young age; such as respect for living things because they learn to care for an animal who may be hungry or in pain, unconditional love, and dealing with loss and death. Adults on the other hand, are provided with more social interaction when they have a pet, such as when being out walking the dogs. This gives us opportunities to make new friends or acquaintances.
Dog owners also enjoy a generally better mood. It’s difficult to stay upset or mad when your pet dog lays his beady eyes on you and asks for attention. Having a dog around encourages us to smile more, talk, be more open to social interaction, and give us an overall better sense of well-being. These benefits have no age limit, because having a pet is wonderful for persons of any age.
And because it is instinctive for dogs to detect danger, their owners can feel much safer. Dogs are also brave creatures who can warn their owners of incoming danger. Their territorial nature also makes them great guard dogs, because of their ability to ward off trespassers and the like.
If you don’t have a pet dog yet, go out and get one today.
