Are You Ready For a Pet?

Having a pet can seem like a lot of fun, especially if all of your friends have pets. Are you really ready for a pet though? Until you are sure that you are absolutely ready for a cat, dog or other pet, it will not be easy for you to convince your parent or guardian that you are absolutely ready for one. It is also a bad idea to adopt a pet if you are not yet ready to have one. Here are some of the different questions that will help you realize whether or not you’re really ready for a pet.

Are You Responsible?

A pet is more responsibility than most kids realize. It is important to determine whether you are really responsible. If you have chores around the house, do you actually do them on time or are you always putting them off? Do you do your homework when you are supposed to, as well as hand it in on time? Responsibility is a main key to being ready for a pet. Since pets require a lot from their owners, it is important to make sure that you are not going to neglect them. When your dog needs to be fed, he cannot wait for you to do it whenever you feel like it. If you are not responsible, your parent is unlike to agree to allowing you to have a pet.

Do You Have Time?

Another thing that you should think about is whether you really have time for a pet. It is important to keep in mind that some types of pets require a lot of attention. Dogs, in particularly, demand a lot from their owners. Do you have the time to feed your dog, walk him, and play with him? If you have a cat, will you be able to give her all of the attention that she deserves? Those who take part in a lot of after school activities and enjoy spending time with friends are unlikely to be able to dedicate enough time to their pets.

Would You Consider Downsizing?

All kids love the idea of having a larger pet, such as a cat or dog. There are plenty of small pets that make a great option for children, however. Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas, and reptiles are all pets that do not require as much attention. These can make great starter pets, and they can also be very fun to have. Plus, if you are able to prove to your parents that you are responsible enough to have one of these pets, it is likely that they will be more willing to allow you to have a larger pet in the future.

Being ready for a pet is very important. Just think about how your future dog would feel if you were not able to give him the attention that he deserves. Making sure that you are really ready for a pet is one of the best things that you can do before trying to convince your parent to allow you to have one.
