Michael Jackson Glove Tops 350K at Auction

Michael Jackson strolled out onto the stage of the Motown 25th Anniversary and literally sent his star even further into the stratosphere back in 1983, and now the single glove that he wore for the performance has reached similar heights. The sparkling glove that was a trademark of that great performance brought in nine times more than the measly 40K that was estimated. 350 thousand dollars was the final bid on the piece of pop culture history.

Jackson’s other items paled in comparison to the glove sale, as the Fedora he wore went for only 22K. In spite of this, the auction was absolutely a huge success if the glove sale is any indication. What in the world sent the glove to such astronomical heights?

Needless to say, the single sparkling glove was probably the most popular symbol of the superstar whose death has sent a world of fans into mourning. That glove was his trademark for quite a while. Ironically, it was during this time period when Michael Jackson’s star was burning the brightest.

The performance that was given at the Motown Anniversary show was one that is still talked about today as being one of the greatest of all time - not just for Jackson but for anyone. He took the stage and performed Billie Jean - one of his hugest hits. What sent the performance over the top, however, was the glove and the fact that he debuted his version of the moonwalk. While many people believe that he invented the moonwalk, that is not the case. He did, however, popularize it and master it like no other. That single dance move sent that performance into a level that no performer has enjoyed before or since.

When you consider the historical significance of the glove and that performance, then the idea of it being sold for well past a quarter of a million dollars does not seem so outlandish. Still, some feel that paying that kind of money is insane for a prop. I want venture to say that the glove is worth a quarter of a million dollars plus, but I will say that it is worth what someone will pay for it.

The glove will certainly hold a place in the hearts and souls of Michael Jackson’s fans, and hopefully will be put on display so that they can enjoy it.
