Aqua Dots Recall

In a growing number of recent recalls, the popular toy, Aqua Dots has been added to the list. What is surprising regarding this recall is that the product isn’t food based nor is the recall due to E Coli bacteria. The Aqua Dots recall is due to the fact that if children swallow the beads, a chemical reaction will occur that is equivalent to the date rape drug. Again, the toys were created in China (does anyone think there may be a conspiracy going on), and are the newest addition to a growing number of recalled toys produced in China.

Typically, the toys produced in China have been recalled due to high amounts of lead, but this is the first time a toy has been recalled due to a chemical reaction when swallowed. The date rape drug, Gamma Hydroxy Butrate is banned and can produce life-threatening results. Aqua Dots are sold in Australia under the name Bindeez, and several children have already become seriously ill in both Australia and New Zealand. Currently, the recall is in effect throughout the world, particularly in the United States, Canada, Britain, and Australia where the beads have been sold and marketed. However, in Australia, the Aqua Dots have not only been recalled, but they have been banned, which indicates more serious legal consequences as a recall. Internet stores such as Amazon have stopped selling Aqua Dots immediately.

Scientists are now currently working on trying to determine exactly how the Aqua Dots or Aqua Beads are converting into Gamma Hydroxy Butyrate. Testing has already determined that some of the beads contain ingredients that are not listed on the manufacturer’s label.

The one thing that all of these recalls have in common is that children are putting toys in their mouths and ingesting harmful chemicals. Though a label may warn parents that a toy is designed for ages four and up, it is almost impossible to constantly keep small children away from toys. Since the holiday season is here, many retailers are dismayed at what the growing number of recalls will mean for holiday shopping. I think parents are also greatly concerned regarding what toys they should purchase for their children. There has been a great revival in old-fashioned children’s toys lately, and I don’t think the recent recalls are hurting that trend at all. Parents are opting for toys that are made from handmade fabrics, silks, and wood. I suspect that more of these toys will be purchased this holiday season as the majority of name brand toys are currently under recall and being added to the growing recall and banned lists daily.

If you have toys that you are concerned about you should visit the manufacturer’s website to stay current with the number of recalled products.

You will always find current recall information on the Consumer Product Safety Commission Website
