What is Zithromax?

Drug Uses

Zithromax is a macrolide antibiotic; it deals with bacteria and the infections caused by it. The drug is used for treating numerous kinds of infections, including respiratory conditions like bronchitis and pneumonia, tonsillitis, and skin, ear, and sexually-transmissible infections.

How to Take Zithromax

Zithromax should be taken under medical supervision, as the dosage and length of therapy with it varies between the types of infection it treats. To take the liquid form of the medication, open the pack and pour its contents in two ounces of water; stir this solution and drink it immediately. Swirl a small amount of water in the emptied glass, and drink the residue. The capsules should be taken with an empty stomach, at least an hour prior to or two hours after taking your meals. The tablet or powder form of the medication may be taken with food or without it; take it with food if it causes stomach upset.

Drug Precautions

Do not take Zithromax if you bear an allergy with this drug, or with other medications which have the same potencies, such as macrolide antibiotics, erythromycin, and clarithromycin. Take the medication under medical supervision if you currently have liver or kidney problems, a continuing record of Long QT syndrome, or a disorder with your heart rhythm. Zithromax is not expected to cause damage to an unborn child, and the possibility that it passes into breast milk is still uncertain. If you are with child or are currently breastfeeding, take the drug with prior medical consultation.

Drug Interactions

Avoid taking antacids with aluminum or magnesium components, within two hours of taking Zithromax. The following medications can also interfere with the efficiency of Zithromax: ergot medication like ergotamine and dihydroergotamine mesylate; phenytoin, nelfinavir, or digoxin; triazolam, cyclosporine, or carbamazepine; HIV drugs like indinavir or saquinavir; medication for reducing cholesterol levels like atorvastatin and cerivastatin; and calcium channel blockers like verapamil, diltiazem, nicardipine, and nimodipine.

Side Effects

Get urgent medical attention in the presence of these severe side effects: an allergic reaction which involves hives, labored breathing, and a swollenness in specific areas of the face; diarrhea which contain either water or blood; jaundice, dark urine, mild fever, queasiness, clay-colored feces, appetite changes, and stomach pain; and chest pain accompanied by irregular heartbeats. Continue using Zithromax under medical supervision if you experience slight queasiness, constipation, diarrhea, or stomach pain, as well as slight itching and rashes.

Missed Dose

Immediately take a missed dose upon remembering it, as long as the next scheduled intake is not yet due. If the succeeding dose is almost up, skip the missed intake, and take the next one as prescribed. Do not take two doses simultaneously, in place of a missed dose.

Overdose

Indications of an overdose of Zithromax involve abdominal pains, symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. If you think you have taken the medication in excess, seek medical help at once.

Storage

Keep tablets within 15-30C; store the oral suspension form within temperatures of 5-30C.
