What is Zyloprim?

Drug Uses

Zyloprim can lower the levels of uric acid within the body (uric acid can cause the formation of kidney stones or gout). As such, the medication is administered for treating gout, heightened levels of uric acid resulting from cancer treatment, or the formation of kidney stones as a result of increased amounts of uric acid in the body.

How to Take Zyloprim

Zyloprim is designed for oral intake, and may be ingested with water. Although the normal dosing schedule is one tablet a day, your individual case may require an adjusted dose in order to obtain the best benefits from the drug. To further lessen your chances of developing kidney stones, make sure that you drink eight to ten glasses of liquid per day (unless otherwise instructed). While taking Zyloprim, try to avoid excessive intake of fruit juices, or vitamin C supplementation; taking too much amounts of vitamin C can increase your chances of acquiring kidney stones.

Drug Precautions

Do not take Zyloprim if you have incurred an allergic reaction with it in the past. Take it under medical supervision if you bear an allergy with other drugs, or if you have the following conditions: you are undergoing chemotherapy; you have problems with your renal or liver functions; and if you have diabetes or an abnormally high blood pressure. Your treatment may need a dose adjustment, or will require special monitoring, if you bear the conditions previously mentioned. It is undetermined if Zyloprim can cause damage to an unborn child, but it is proven that it can pass into a nursing infant through breast milk. Take the medication under medical supervision if you are pregnant or nursing.

Drug Interactions

These drugs can interfere with the potency of Zyloprim: blood thinners like dicoumarol and warfarin; antibiotics like ampicillin and amoxicillin; diuretics; azathioprine, cyclosporine, or mercaptopurine; and chlorpropamide. This list is not exhaustive, and there are various other medications which can contraindicate with Zyloprim. Make sure that your doctor is well-informed about all of your current medications, whether prescribed or otherwise (this includes supplementation of vitamins and minerals, and alternative or herbal supplements).

Side Effects

Discontinue taking Zyloprim and seek immediate medical aid if you incur the following conditions: an allergic reaction which involves inflammation in certain areas of your face, hives, and labored breathing; the initial symptoms of a skin rash, however slight; inability to urinate, or pain sensations and bleeding whenever you do urinate; intense tingling, loss of sensation or pain, muscle feebleness, and bruising; and fever, accompanied by migraines and a blistered, peeling skin rash.

Missed Dose

Immediately make up for a missed dose, unless the next intake is due near. Skip the dose otherwise, and take the next one as scheduled.

Overdose

Indications of a Zyloprim overdose shouldn’t cause life-threatening conditions, but do seek immediate medical help if you suspect that you have taken the drug in excess.

Storage

Store Zyloprim within maintained temperatures of 15-25C, away from excessive moisture; dispense it from tight-capped containers.
