What is Zyrtec?

Drug Uses

Zyrtec is a medication which can effectively reduce histamine, a natural substance produced by the body. Histamine is a chemical which causes sneezing fits, a runny nose, itching, and watering eyes. Zyrtec is administered for dealing with symptoms indicative of a cold or allergy, such as those mentioned above. It may also be used for the treatment of the symptoms of chronic urticaria (also known as hives), such as itching and swelling.

How to Take Zyrtec

Zyrtec is an oral administration drug which is normally taken once a day; however, it may be administered regularly, especially when the symptoms of an allergic reaction flare up. Zyrtec may be taken with food, or on an empty stomach. If the tablet is in chewable form, chew it thoroughly before ingesting it. The oral suspension form should be initially shaken before being measured with a dose-measurement spoon. Follow the indications on the product label, or on your prescription.

Drug Precautions

Do not take Zyrtec if you are allergic to any of its component substances. Taking it can also result in side effects which can hamper your normal thinking and reactions, so take extra precaution with activities which require you to remain alert. Avoid alcohol, as it can enhance the side effects of Zyrtec. Medications which have a drowsing effect can also contribute to the lethargic effects of Zyrtec, so inform your doctor if you are taking drugs like sleeping pills, narcotics for pain, muscle relaxants, and medications for seizures or anxiety.

Drug Interactions

If you are taking medications which have a similar effect to Zyrtec, such as cold and allergy drugs, narcotics for pain management, muscle relaxers, pills for sleep disorders, seizure, depression, and medicine for anxiety, do so with caution and prior consultation. These can enhance the drowsing effect of Zyrtec. Also, alcoholic beverages can increase the intensity of the adverse effects of the drug, so avoid taking alcohol if you are under medication.

Side Effects

Immediately discontinue intake in the presence of an allergic reaction, and seek immediate medical aid. Do the same if you experience problems with your sight; a quick, pounding, and irregular heart rate; restlessness or hyperactivity; uncontrollable shaking fits, or sleep disorders like insomnia; confusion; and infrequent or inability to urinate. If you feel dizzy, drowsy, or tired, or if you have a parched mouth, sore throat, and coughing fits, seek medical help. These are minor adverse effects of using Zyrtec, but may still need treatment.

Missed Dose

In case you are unable to take a dose as scheduled, avoid taking an extra dose in an attempt at making up for the missed intake. Skip the missed dose and take the next one, according to your prescription.

Overdose

An overdose of Zyrtec requires immediate medical attention. Although the symptoms of its excessive intake are still undetermined, if you experience extreme drowsiness, feebleness, and confusion, seek for medical help immediately.

Storage

Keep Zyrtec in temperatures which range between 20-25C, or within allowable temperatures of 15-30C.
