What is Vaniqa?

Drug Uses

Vaniqa is a topical prescription which decreases the amount of facial hair in women. This is achieved through the inhibition of the enzyme needed by the hair follicle for hair growth. The end benefit is slowed hair growth, and an improvement in appearance on the areas where the medication is applied. Vaniqa is not a depilatory cream; it cannot permanently get rid of unwanted hair. Your treatment program must include the maintenance of any hair removal method you are presently using. The medicine only contributes to the management and improvement of your appearance.

How to Take Vaniqa

Before administering Vaniqa, remove the hair on the treatment areas using your present hair removal techniques. Wait for five minutes following the removal, and then apply a slight layer of the medication on the affected areas of your face and the adjacent skin, rubbing it in thoroughly. Leave the medication for at least four hours before washing it off. Do this twice a day with eight hour intervals. Maintain the treatment even if you do not observe any improvement. The hair reduction happens gradually, but improvement is visible within one to two months.

Drug Precautions

Avoid getting the medicine on your mouth, nose, and eyes; if this happens, flush it out with plenty of water and call for medical help. The benefits of Vaniqa depend on its regular use. If you discontinue treatment after achieving the desired results, the hair will grow back on the treated area about two months after you stop using the medication. It is still undetermined if Vaniqa can cause harm to an unborn or breastfeeding child; use it under medical supervision if you are conceiving or nursing. Vaniqa is currently not approved for use in children under twelve years old.

Drug Interactions

You may be under a prescription which involves drugs that can contraindicate with Vaniqa; if you are taking any supplements or medication, or if you are presently using other kinds of topical preparations, make sure your doctor knows about it before you use Vaniqa for treatment. You may be given a regulated dose, or you may go through health monitoring while under treatment.

Side Effects

Vaniqa can cause symptoms of further irritation if it is applied to broken skin; these may involve rashes, burning or tingling sensations, redness, and stinging. In such instances, reduce your applications to once a day. If the irritation persists, discontinue use and seek medical advice. Hair bumps (or folliculitis) can also be experienced; take the same advice if the condition persists.

Missed Dose

Skip a missed dose if it exceeds the hour of the supposed application. Do not apply Vaniqa in double doses in order to ‘catch up’ with a missed dose.

Overdose

Overdose through application is unlikely to happen. If the medication has been ingested, call your nearest poison control facility immediately.

Storage

Store the medication at a room temperature of 25C, with allowable temperature limits of 15-30C. Immediately dispose of the tube upon expiration.
