What is Ultram?

Drug Uses

Ultram, in its extended-release form, can provide sufficient relief from pain if it is administered for conditions which require sustained pain management, like cancer, surgery, or joint pain. Its potency ranges depending on whether the pain which needs to be treated is moderate or severe. This is made possible due to the medication’s ability to reduce the brain’s sensitivity and response to pain signals. It can also decrease the intensity of pain signals which pass from one nerve to the next.

How to Take Ultram

Ultram tablets should only be administered orally; do not inhale the powder which is contained in the capsule, or dilute it in any liquid before injecting the solution into your body. Doing so can cause a serious overdose, leading to severe adverse symptoms, and to death. Avoid tampering with the capsule by crushing and opening it. Ingest it whole; you may do this with water or after a meal, if preferred, as long as you take it in the same manner and approximate times. Although your intake dosage may differ depending on your condition, taking Ultram in excess of 300mg in a single day can lead to an overdose.

Drug Precautions

Do not take Ultram if you have a present or previous dependence to drugs or alcohol, while you are intoxicated, or if you are currently taking the following substances: beverages with alcoholic content; narcotics for pain management; sedatives or tranquilizers; street drugs like cocaine and heroine; medications for severe depression and anxiety; and treatment drugs for any mental illness (like manic-depressive disorder or schizophrenia). Your doctor should also know about the following conditions before you take Ultram: kidney, stomach, and liver disorders; and a record of depression, suicidal attempts, or mental imbalance.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications can increase your chances for seizures if you take them in combination with Ultram: MAO inhibitors such as tranylcypromine, isocarboxazid, and phenelzine; and antidepressant medicines such as desipramine, clomipramine, fluvoxamine, sertraline, and citalopram. Before you take Ultram, inform your doctor if you are also using medications which can make you drowsy, such as cold, seizure, and pain medicines; muscle relaxants; and medications for severe depression and agitation.

Side Effects

Serious side effects which are incurred after taking Ultram may involve convulsive seizures, a skin rash which is blistering and peeling, a weakened pulse, symptoms of an allergic reaction, and shallow breathing. If you experience such symptoms, seek for medical attention immediately.

Missed Dose

Take a forgotten dose of Ultram immediately if the next scheduled intake is not due for some time. Otherwise, skip over the missed dose, and proceed with your regular intake schedule.

Overdose

An overdose of Ultram (an intake which exceeds 300mg) can be fatal. If you experience giddiness or drowsiness, extreme feebleness, clammy skin, or if you feel like you are slipping into a coma, seek emergency medical help at once.

Storage

Store Ultram tablets within temperatures which range from 15 to 30C. Keep it away from sources of heat and moisture.
