What is Transderm Scop?

Drug Uses

Transderm Scop is administered for relief of symptoms associated with vertigo (motion sickness), such as queasiness, dizziness, and vomiting. It is an anticholinergic drug which can have beneficial effects in your body, such as reduce your fluid secretions, slow down your stomach or intestine’s functions, or dilate your pupils. Transderm Scop can also be used for other conditions and purposes.

How to Take Transderm Scop

The medication is administered from a patch, applied at least four hours prior to travel. Apply the patch to an unexposed, hairless area in the skin behind your ear. Its effectiveness should last for three days before the potency wears off completely. If you still need the medication after such period, peel off the patch and apply another one behind your other ear. Keep the patch dry while you are wearing it. If it falls off (during bathing or swimming) reapply another patch to your other ear.

Drug Precautions

Try not to let the medication get into your eyes; if it does, you may incur symptoms like dry or itching eyes, blurry vision, or dilated pupils. Although these usually dissipate in time, rinse your eyes thoroughly with water and seek medical help if needed. If you have bladder or urination difficulties, an enlarged prostate gland, kidney or liver conditions, and glaucoma, your dosage may be adjusted depending on the severity of your condition. You may also need special monitoring during the course of your treatment.

Drug Interactions

Transderm Scop can enhance the effects of other medications with drowsing after effects, such as antihistamines and antidepressants, a sedative for treating sleep disorders, muscle relaxants, and drugs for anxiety and pain management. Ensure that your doctor knows about all of your current medications, and do not take any drug without medical permission; these include prescriptions, supplements, and OTC medicines.

Side Effects

Severe side effects can involve an allergic reaction. Other effects are more common, but are not usually severe: a parched mouth, and a dry nose or throat; sleepiness; a decrease in appetite; difficulty in starting urination; an abnormal or rapid heartbeat; restlessness, anxiety, inability to sleep, or agitation; and blurry vision. If you discontinue the medication after more than three days of using it, be aware that you may experience queasiness, vomiting, poor body coordination, and migraine headaches. If any of the above effects persist or develop in intensity, seek for medical advice.

Missed Dose

Do not use two patches of Transderm Scop simultaneously. You will only probably use the patch when the need arises, so it is doubtful that you will follow a regular intake schedule. Use another patch after the first three days of treatment if necessary.

Overdose

Indications of a severe overdose of Transderm Scop may involve agitation, convulsive episodes, hallucinatory visions, sleepiness and dizziness. If you experience these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

Storage

Store the patches in a dry, cool container, away from any source of moisture. Keep it within allowable room temperatures of 20 to 25C.
