What is Tramadol?

Drug Uses

Tramadol is a round-the-clock pain management medication. It can provide relief for painful sensations resulting from surgery, or from acute conditions like cancers and joint pain. It achieves this by hampering your brain’s recognition and reaction to painful signals, and by reducing the intensity of such signals as it is transmitted from one nerve to the other. Tramadol is also prescribed for other conditions and symptoms.

How to Take Tramadol

Tramadol should be used only for oral administration; do not tamper with a capsule by crushing or breaking it. The powder contained in the capsule must not be inhaled, or dissolved in liquid and injected into the bloodstream; doing so can result in a serious overdose, entailing severe side effects, and may prove to be fatal. Swallow the capsule whole (you may take it with water if necessary). Your dosage may vary with your prescription, but do not take more than 300mg of the medication in a single day.

Drug Precautions

You may incur a seizure with an intake of Tramadol; you’re risks for such are that much higher if you bear the following conditions: a record of drug or alcohol dependence; a history of head trauma; current or previous experiences with seizure disorders like epilepsy; metabolic disorders; and if you have a prescription which involves antidepressants, medications for queasiness and vomiting, and muscle relaxants.

Drug Interactions

You have higher risks for incurring seizures if you use Tramadol in combination with other medications. If you are taking the following drugs, take Tramadol with prior medical advice: MAO inhibitors like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, and selegiline; and antidepressants, including citalopram, desipramine, escitalopram, imipramine, and sertraline. Inform you doctor if you are also using these medications: warfarin, rifampin, ketoconazole, carbamazepine, quinidine, erythromycin, St. John's wort, and medicines with drowsing effects like pain and cold medicines, muscle relaxants, and drugs for seizure, severe depression, and anxiety.

Side Effects

You may incur serious side effects resulting from an intake of Tramadol; if you acquire an allergic reaction to the drug (as indicated by an inflamed throat or swollen facial areas, difficulty in breathing, and hives), or if you experience these symptoms, seek for medical assistance at once: convulsive seizures; a skin rash which blisters and peels; and faint breathing with a weak pulse rate. Other side effects are not as severe, including blurred vision, sleep disorders (specifically insomnia), flushing (warm, tingling sensations accompanied by redness, and appetite changes.

Missed Dose

Immediately take a missed dose as soon as you are reminded of it, provided that the next intake is not yet already due. Otherwise, skip over the missed dose and carry on with your routine dosing schedule.

Overdose

If you feel that you have taken Tramadol in excessive amounts, seek medical attention at once; an overdose of the medication is potentially fatal. Indications of such may involve extreme fatigue, cold or clammy skin, sleepiness, and coma.

Storage

Dispense Tramadol from tight-sealed containers. Keep it store within allowable room temperatures of 15 - 30C.
