What is Propecia?

Drug Uses

Propecia stops the conversion of a male hormone (testosterone) into DHT, the latter known to be responsible for male-pattern hair loss. The drug treats this condition, and is most effective on the head’s vertex (top) and antierior middle-scalp (middle front) areas. Propecia is at present ineffective in treating hair loss at the temple area (receding hairlines). It is intended only for use by men, and should never be administered to women and children.

How to Take Propecia

Propecia is normally obtainable in pill or tablet form. It is administered in a single dose once a day, downed with water if needed. You may take it with meals or with an empty stomach. In order to acquire its full effectiveness, it is necessary that you take Propecia on a regular basis; have your prescription replenished before it runs out of doses. You may also need to take blood tests on a regular basis in order to ensure that the medication is beneficial to your condition.

Drug Precautions

Propecia must never be administered to any woman or child; it can also be easily absorbed through the skin, and such individuals should not tamper or handle the pills. The unborn child is particularly at risk, as the medication can cause severe birth defects if an exposure is made during pregnancy. If a conceiving woman is inadvertently exposed to the medication through a tampered tablet, wash the affected area with antiseptic immediately. Seek medical advice if you begin to notice the development of breast lumps, discharge coming from the nipples, or other unusual changes on the area. This can be indications of male breast cancer.

Drug Interactions

If you are allergic to any of the components of Propecia, or if you have incurred symptoms indicative of such (hives, inflamed parts of your face, difficulty in maintaining normal breathing, or a constricted throat), do not take Propecia. You may be currently taking medicine which can interact with the effectiveness of Propecia (if you take them in combination). Inform your doctor of your current prescriptions, as well as all of your over-the-counter medications and dietary supplements.

Side Effects

Most of the adverse effects of Propecia are non-severe, and may include sensations of a blackout, pain in your testicles, or irregularities in ejaculation; inflammation on the hands or feet; impotence, or a decrease in your sex drive; dizziness and feebleness; migraine headaches; running nose; inflamed or tender breasts; and skin rashes.

Missed Dose

If you forget to take a scheduled dose of Propecia, make up for it at once. But if the next intake interval is almost up, skip over the missed dose, and carry on with your usual dosing schedule.

Overdose

An excessive intake of Propecia is not expected to result in life-threatening conditions. Get immediate medical aid if you believe that you have taken too much of the medication.

Storage

Dispense Propecia in tightly-sealed bottles. Store it within maintained temperatures of 15 to 30 degrees Celsius, away from intense moisture and heat.
