What is Paxil CR?

Drug Uses

Paxil CR belongs to a relatively new class of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. The drug has a direct influence on chemicals within the brain which have a tendency to become unbalanced, and is administered for the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and post-traumatic disorder.

How to Take Paxil CR

Paxil CR is intended for oral administration, and is normally taken once a day. Keep your intakes within the same times each day in order to obtain the full benefit. It may be taken without food or right after a meal. The tablet is in extended-release form; avoid tampering with it by crushing or chewing it prior to ingestion. Doing so will cause too much of the drug to be dispersed into your body at the same time. Swallow it whole, with water if preferred. The oral suspension should be shaken well in its bottle before the dose is measured out with a medicine cup.

Drug Precautions

Prior to taking Paxil CR, inform your doctor about any present liver or kidney disorder, seizure disorders such as epilepsy, suicidal tendencies, or manic-depressive disorder. You may require a special dosage adjustment or intake monitoring with such conditions, or you may not be allowed to take Paxil CR. It is still undetermined if the drug can cause harm to an unborn child; but it is known to pass into breast milk, and onto a nursing baby. Pregnant and nursing women should seek medical advice first before taking on Paxil CR.

Drug Interactions

Taking Paxil CR simultaneously with medications for swelling, fever, pain management, or arthritis may cause easy bruising and bleeding. The following drugs can also interact with Paxil CR’s potency: atomoxetine, cimetidine, tryptophan, fosamprenavir, lithium, tramadol, risperidone, and ritonavir; medications for heart rhythm like flecainide and propafenone; other antidepressants; prochlorperazine, mesoridazine, and chlorpromazine; warfarin; and rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, almotriptan, naratriptan, or frovatriptan.

Side Effects

Although an allergic reaction from Paxil CR rarely occurs, seek emergency aid at the presence of symptoms like hives, laborious breathing, swollen parts of the face, or a constricted throat. Seek medical advice if recent or developing symptoms of behavioral changes occur: extreme restlessness, suicidal thoughts, mood changes, panic attacks, sleep abnormalities, agitation, anxiety, or irritability. Seek immediate medical aid if you incur convulsions, problems with your body coordination, involuntary muscle spasms, a quickening heartbeat, agitation, confusion, and profuse sweating.

Missed Dose

Make up for a missed intake as soon as you are able to do so; but if the next dose is nearly due, skip the missed dose and anticipate the next one, taking it according to your regular schedule.

Overdose

If you suspect that you have incurred an overdose of Paxil CR, seek medical attention immediately. The signs of an excessive intake may include dilated pupils, nausea and vomiting, hyperactivity, agitation, tremors, convulsion, drowsiness, and agitation.

Storage

Store Paxil CR within maintained room temperatures of 20-25C. Keep it sealed in a tightly-capped container.
