What is Levitra?

Drug Uses

Levitra is an oral treatment for male impotence. It relaxes specific muscles which are located near the penis, increasing the blood flow to the same areas in consequence. This allows the patient to attain and sustain an erection, if the drug is used prior to sexual intercourse. Levitra should not be used to treat diseases which are sexually-transmissible in nature, such as gonorrhea, HIV, and syphilis.

How to Take Levitra

Levitra should be taken as instructed or while under medical supervision. You may take each dose of the medication with water or food, or with an empty stomach. It is usually taken as the need arises, or about sixty minutes prior to any sexual activity. Take note that Levitra can only induce an erection if prior sexual stimulation is present; you will not achieve an erection with the mere ingestion of the tablet. Take the doses with provided intake intervals of 24 hours.

Drug Precautions

Do not administer Levitra if your current medication includes drugs with nitrate components, such as those prescribed for chest pain or cardiac problems. Taking Levitra simultaneously with nitrate drugs can lead to a severe reduction in your blood pressure levels, and can cause strokes, fainting, or heart failure. Take the drug under medical supervision if you have the following conditions: a record of cardiac failure, stroke, or blood clots within the last six months; angina or congestive cardiac failure; blood pressure problems; disorders with the blood cell; liver disease; or if you are receiving dialysis.

Drug Interactions

Medications which have nitrate components can contraindicate with Levitra (such as amyl nitrate and isosorbide dinitrate), as well as these other medicines: drugs for treatment of heart rhythm problems like sotalol, amiodarone, and procainamide; doxazosin or prazosin; medications for HIV treatment, including nelfinavir, amprenavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, and efavirenz; antifungal drugs like itraconazole; rifampin; and carbamazepine.

Side Effects

Stop the intake of Levitra if you acquire an allergic reaction (with symptoms like hives, labored breaths, and inflammation of certain spots on your face), or if you incur the following adverse symptoms: an erection which is sustained for periods longer than four hours; sensations of fainting or light-headedness; inflamed areas on your hands, ankles or feet; an abnormally-paced heartbeat; changes with your vision or hearing; and a sudden difficulty in maintaining your normal breathing.

Missed Dose

Levitra is ingested only as you need it, usually prior to engaging in any form of sexual activity. Although you may take a single dose of the medication once a day, you are unlikely to follow a regular intake schedule.

Overdose

If you feel that you may have taken this medicine in excess, or if you have taken it in double doses, seek medical attention at once. The usual signs of a potential overdose can involve chest pains, impaired vision, inflammation on the legs or ankles, an abnormal heart rate, and back pains.

Storage

Store Levitra within allowable temperature limits of 15-30C. Keep it in tight containers, and out of children’s reach.
