What is Kenalog?

Drug Uses

Kenalog is a steroidal medication for topical administration. It can effectively treat a variety of conditions, including psoriasis, allergies, and eczema. One form of the medication is administered for treating mouth ulcers (dental paste). Kenalog decreases the potency of chemicals within your body, those which may cause swollenness and redness. The drug may also be administered for other conditions other than those specified above.

How to Take Kenalog

A small amount of the medication should amply treat an affected area; just rub it in thoroughly. Kenalog is best administered before bedtime; for more persistent conditions, it can also be applied for up to three times in a single day, with eight-hour intervals. Avoid applying the medicine for more than four times within twenty-four hours. Keep your hands clean by washing them prior to and after making an application (unless the affected areas are located on your hands). Dry your mouth ulcers before applying a small amount of paste so it would stick better.

Drug Precautions

Kenalog cannot treat skin infections which are bacterial, fungal, or viral in nature. Take caution if you bear these conditions: any kind of skin infection, particularly a tuberculosis infection; herpes infections (such as cold sores), or chicken pox; stomach ulcers; and diabetes. Your application doses may require an adjustment, or you may be allowed to use the medication under medical supervision during treatment. Avoid covering the treatment areas unless instructed; this can cause your skin to absorb more amounts of the drug than necessary, and may lead to adverse conditions. Do not apply Kenalog to your bodily orifices and open wounds to prevent an irritation; you may also have to avoid certain cosmetic and antiseptic skin products for the same purpose.

Drug Interactions

Most oral or intravenous medications won’t usually interact with a topical application of Kenalog; but since there still exists the possibility for a contraindication, ensure that your doctor knows about all of your medicines, especially topical preparations. These also include dietary supplements, herbal products, and prescription or OTC drugs.

Side Effects

Discontinue using Kenalog if you begin to notice conditions which indicate that the medication is being absorbed by your skin and gums: an irregular heart rate; puffiness on your face, or a sudden gain in weight; blurry vision, or observing halos surrounding light sources; mood swings; unusual feebleness; and sleep difficulties like insomnia. If you experience these conditions, or if obtain an allergic reaction resulting from use (hives, inflammation, difficult breathing), get medical attention as soon as possible.

Missed Dose

Apply a missed application at once, and adjust the succeeding doses accordingly (if you follow a dosing schedule).

Overdose

Excessive amounts of Kenalog application on your skin is unlikely to cause any severe health conditions, but if you have ingested it, immediately get in touch with the nearest poison control center in your area.
