What is Evista?

Drug Uses

Evista is administered for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. The medication interferes with the process of bone formation and bone tissue breakdown within the patient’s body, thereby reducing the loss of bone mass. It is also used to lessen the risks for invasive cancer of the breasts in postmenopausal patients who bear osteoporosis, or in those who otherwise carry risks for incurring extensive breast cancer. Evista may be used for other conditions as well.

How to Take Evista

The usual daily dosage of Evista is a single 60 milligram dose, once a day. It may be taken at any time during the day, with or without meals, but try to take it at the same approximate hour each day. Your condition may need a dosage prescription which is different from the one mentioned; your doctor will be the one to determine your specific dosage requirements.

Drug Precautions

Discontinue your intake of Evista at least three days before you undergo surgery, or prior to an extended bed rest; inform your surgeon or physician if you are taking the medication in such instances. Evista should be taken only as a partial treatment of a complete program which may involve diet and exercise, weight management, and calcium and vitamin D supplementation. Follow your regimen closely. Do not take Evista if you have blood illnesses or problems with blood circulation or clotting, or if you are not yet at the menopausal stage.

Drug Interactions

Some of the medications which can interact with Evista involve anticoagulants, diazepam, cholestyramine, diazoxide, contraceptive pills, and medications for hormone-replacement therapy. Notify your doctor if you carry a prescription which includes such drugs, or if you are also using OTC medications and other supplements (dietary or herbal).

Side Effects

You may experience the development of conditions indicative of an adverse effect; get medial attention immediately if these circumstances occur: inflammation on your hands and feet; an unusual vaginal bleeding; influenza symptoms (body ache, fever, chills) and sore throat; breast lumps, tenderness, or pain; an unexpected feebleness or loss of sensation, particularly on only one side of your body; pain or inflammation in one or both of your legs; an unexpected headache, difficulties with speech and vision, vexation, and vertigo; a painful or burning sensation whenever you urinate; an intense, painful sensation on your lower back; and indications of an allergic reaction (hives, swollen parts of your face, labored breathing).

Missed Dose

Skip a missed dose altogether if your next intake is due within an hour. If you remember a missed intake within an hour of its intended schedule, you may catch up with the missed dose by taking it. Avoid taking double doses simultaneously as compensation for a missed dose.

Overdose

An overdose of Evista may be indicated by muscle cramps and dizziness; seek immediate medical attention if you feel that you have taken the medication in excessive amounts.

Storage

Store Evista within sustained room temperatures of 20-25C, or within allowable limits of 15-30C. Keep it in tightly-sealed containers.
